Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I saw the Christmas books thread in the picture book forum. I thought I'd start one for other Christmas books. What are you reading with your older children this Advent/Christmas?

So far we've enjoyed The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (3rd year in a row) and The Birds' Christmas Carol (2nd year in a row). We will read The Trees Kneel at Christmas, which I mentioned on another thread, tomorrow. I read it alone to check it out, but the kids haven't heard it yet.

I also have a few of Joe Wheeler's Christmas in My Heart and Christmas in My Soul books from the library. We will probably do some reading aloud from those anthologies of stories soon too. I noticed that one of his stories is of the miraculous staircase in Sante Fe, NM.

What about the rest of you?

Tabitha's Travels by Arnold Ytreeide, and The Thirteen Days of Christmas by Jenny Overton. This one really ought to be read during the Christmas season, but we started it during Advent . It is light reading and very funny, but also includes references to lots of Christmas traditions - some are real, some are invented by the author but are so well done I can't spot the joins. Although the story isn't given any specific date or place, it is obviously set in pre-Reformation England, so the customs mentioned mostly have a Catholic flavour. Irene, I bet your older girls would enjoy this one!

We're enjoying Tabitha's Travels right now, too. Last year we read Jotham's Journey and the kids loved it so much we knew we wanted to do Tabitha this year.

We're getting ready to start [i/]The Thirteen Days of Christmas; we've also read Miracle on 34th Street -- illustrated by Tomie dePaola; also Amahl and the Night Visitors -- which is a quick great read. Also, any by Alta Halverson Seymour -- Arne and the Christmas Star or The Christmas Stove were the two we read aloud and REALLY enjoyed. Check your library for these as they're all OOP

I hope you enjoy it. I picked my copy up at a used book sale a while ago, but haven't come across anyone else who has read it, so I'd like to know what you think.

I just reserved The Thirteen Days of Christmas at the library. It is available at another branch and should arrive at my branch by Christmas. Thanks Kathryn!

And, Mary, I was able to reserve Amahl and the Night Visitors too. Thanks for the suggestion. No luck on the others though.
