Hi!
I have 7 dc (ranging from 10 - NB) and over the holidays I did something I have never done before..this is embarassing, considering I've never done this ...read them a short novel outloud. It was a Christmas present my 5 year old received, and although I had to skip a few paragraphs (Magic 8 Ball details) we all REALLY enjoyed it.
My question is, could you please recommend short stories/novels that you have enjoyed with your children? We will look for them at our local library.

Let's see.... how about Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, or maybe James and the Giant Peach? Both of those are by Roald Dahl, and I think they probably appeal to all the ages of your children. Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard Atwater is another good one. Or The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh- that's a really short one, so it's a good way to ease into reading aloud. Some books just naturally read aloud better than others.

My dd is 9 and we loved Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. It was a lot of fun to read and funny. We are going o read them all.

I concur with the Mrs Piggle Wiggle books. I would add a caution however. The first book is wonderful and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle teaches wonderful lessons. However, as the series progresses, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle uses magic to cure the children. If you have concerns about magic you should preview the books. Even if you don't have concerns about magic the ones where she uses magic just aren't as much fun.
A Cricket in Time Square is a lovely book as is The Doll House People.

My boys loved Farmer Boy and Little House on the Prairie, and we are now reading Little Britches. We all enjoy it so much! It is a bit more colorful (if not as "romantic")than the Little House books, but it does make for an entertaining read aloud. I think it is perhaps the difference between a man telling the story and a woman.
Both dh and I have loved the parents in the book since it shows their faults as well as their virtues (but not in a derogatory way at all--the children including the boy/author's voice is always respectful of them if honest). We are both big fans of Ma and Pa Ingalls (Ma Ingalls is my role model  ), but we admitted to each other that it was refreshing to read of those not quite so perfect.
So far Dad has changed the name of a horse, but its otherwise not offensive at all.
I have been reading the Narnia books during the day, and they are of course wonderful, but I think I enjoy the aforementioned better as a read aloud. It probably depends on the interest of your children. Little House also breaks up easily since the chapters are kind of like vignettes instead of a plot that carries throughout the entire book.

We can attest to the liveliness of Little Britches. Funny and serious, too (we're only on chapter five, thank goodness - we don't want it to end any time soon!)

We are reading Just David right now. Wonderful book for all ages!!!
Next up are the Anne of Green Gables books.

There is an entire series by Ralph Moody and all the books are excellent. When Mary M and I met up at the Littleton CO History Museum awhile back we saw a great exhibit on Ralph Moody and the Little Britches Books and Rodeo.
