We are reading through the presidents this year for our history. Well we are now at Lincoln and the Civil War era. We also just did Foolow the Drinking Gourd for our unit study, a fold and learn for the inauguration and are now doing George Washington Carver unit study.
So my question is this, how do you handle the derogitory(sp) terms that were used for blacks in the time period? I am pre reading The Slave Dancer which on the back lists it as 5th grade reading level,my dd is 4th grade 9 yo. Do you let your children hear those words in read alouds or do you avoid anything with those terms until they are older? When, if ever, is it o.k. to read these books. It was a part of history and there is some great literature out there with these terms...
Opinions appreciated.

we come up against this occasionally, and I either skip over them or use a different word (I have this weird gift of being able to read ahead while I'm reading aloud, so if I haven't PRE-read something--nearly never--I can usually catch it and plan to skip or reword it, depending on context.)

Just because I have lots of boys, I often choose "donkey" over its cousin, for example!
