My husband just began reading Robin Hood to our 7yo daughter. He asked me to post this question on 4Real!  Should he stop and explain the language or just read? Our daughter asks questions all the time and he doesn't know if he'll be able to keep up with expalining the language in the story. Any suggestions?

If he thinks a word needs explanation he can offer it - otherwise, I'd just follow her lead - if she asks questions all the time, she'll definitely stop him if she needs clarification!
Ask me how I know  .

Hi Dear
Has he tried to say, "At the end of the paragraph ( page, chapter,) I'll answer your questions." Before they begin has he tried saying something like, "Sweetheart, this is a tough read because of the challenging language. I think that you are up to it because I know you can be patient and wait for the story to unfold, even if some of the words are confusing to you right now."
A big hug to dad for taking on this challenge.

Oh...sometimes if there is one word that I can anticipate he doesn't know, I'll offer a quick definition (sorta under my breath as not to break the flow of the story) for Ian. He's my child who finds relief from this type of help because he's a detail guy. My others didn't want this help - Devin liked to figure words out for herself and Aiden just went with the big picture flow of the story.

i read Old Yeller some time back when my oldest boy was fairly small. It's written with a dialect. I couldn't tell how much he was really "getting", I took it as a good sign to just keep going, that he'd keep bringing me the book to read more
You can always go back and read challenging books again when they're older so that their understanding will increase. The things you get from some books as a child are totally different than you get reading them as an adult. Some books just aren't a read one time thing.

Sometimes with challenging books I may read an abridged version first so they can understand and follow the story line (like reading Lamb's Shakespeare before the real thing!)

Thank you for all of your advise. I read them to Mark and he felt better that just reading through and having time later was a good idea. When he read to her last night, she didn't have any questions. I think she will figure things out on her own. Thank You!!!
