Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi. We read the Strega Nona book suggested in Real Learning for the Advent unit. I wanted to make the Baccala recipe with the kids and was wondering if dried codfish is easily found at my supermarket or I would have to go to a specialty store or maybe order it online. TIA.

LOL. I saw your subject title on the active topics and the first thing I thought of was Strega Nona.

Good luck finding codfish!

I've found baccala at Walmart before -- usually where there are a lot of Latinos.

Another place to try -- Trader Joe's, but again, may be dependent on location.

You could probably ask your local fish monger if they can order it for you if need be.

We have purchased it at a fish market and Wegman's in PA.
BTW, this has become a Christmas Eve tradition in our family--thanks to Strega Nona. Even my "picky" eater will not do without fish soup on christmas Eve.

Thank ya'll. I'm encouraged at the idea of a dense Latino population meaning I might be able to find some. I live in San Antonio. My dh (Mexican) always talks of how his family used to make these shrimp cakes (for Lent) and I know that recipes uses dried, flaked shrimp which is the same form the fish stew recipe calls for. Again, thank you.

Portuguese areas should also have this available. Emeril has made recipes with it often on his show.
