Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can I put this in the literature fourm?

I have read some old posts about this series- seems it's either love or hate, with the kids loving them and the parents hanging on.

We just read our first one- to tie in with studying the rainforest.

Umm... are they all like that? Of course, ds loved it and is asking for more of them. I can't decide if I want to take the plunge. I can see how they would be fun, plus they are short and simple. OTOH, I didn't find too much to hang our hats on in the one we read.

DH was looking crosseyed after reading a couple of Boxcar children and said he'd read the LIttle House books over and over forever if he could be excused from Boxcar duty. I'm wondering if the treehouse will be the same.

Alternatively, I should ask: what Magic Treehouse books did you think were really, really good and worth the read?

Yep they are all like that. They tend to just have a couple of "facts" in them about each topic. It's hard to "get" though when read out of order. There is definitely an order and it really is important to the "whole" big story.

Maybe that was a part of your problem with it???

They're absolutely twaddle. I would never "require" them, but let my kids read them when and if they want. My beginning readers usually like them for a time. My youngest is reading them now, with some difficulty. I find the books painful and am glad no one has asked to borrow them on CD.

We also read these books when the children were first reading chapter books. They did serve a purpose in that they helped the dc overcome their fear of not knowing ever single word on the page. And they were very entertained by the books. That being said, I did give them away to the ps when we moved.

We enjoyed them--for fun. There are study guides which go into a little more depth on the subject.

Twaddle, but a quick read and the kids do seem to enjoy them. Good for first readers. The poor writing drives me crazy and they are all the same basically. We quickly move on to better literature.

by the way, I enjoy the Box Car Children!

I can't stand to read these. I think I read 5 or 6 and then my oldest could read them to himself. It took a few months for him to get tired of the series.

Another series I didn't like reading was Hank the Cowdog. Both my boys LOVE this series, though. Thankfully, my husband didn't mind them at all and he read them. My oldest reads them to himself now, and they borrow the CDs from the library often. Lucky me, they have a CD player in their room. Colin has either listened to his dad read, or read to himself all 52 in the series. That's how much he loves Hank. Our dog is even named for a character from the Hank books.

OK- good to know I'm not alone. I was just thinking that there would be more to the book somehow- I kept waiting for more plot, more action, more something... But if I look at them from the beginning reader's stand point, I can see the appeal.

We just read the James Herriot Treasury for Children as a read aloud, so this felt like falling out of the treehouse.
