I hope this is the right place to post this.
I have been reading the Little House series aloud to my almost 4yo. We are nearing the end  and I am looking for what series to read next. Unfortunately, I didn't do alot of reading as a young girl (I was doing too much math I guess  ) so I am not sure what is good. She has absolutely loved the Little House series, if that helps at all with your suggestions.

Beth, Anything from Bethlehem Bookswould be a good choice. They give you an idea of what is for older readers in their descriptions, so you can choose well. Also, how about Melissa Wiley's Little House series about Laura's mother's childhood and her grandmother's?

Beth, I just wanted to come and second anything by Bethlehem books...the Fairchild Family Series was a HUGE hit! If your daughter enjoyed Little House, she'll adore the Fairchild Family as well! Any book they offer makes a great read aloud.
Beatrix Potter and all of the Peter Rabbit books are always enjoyed here.
My children also really love Catholic Heritage Curricula's Devotional Stories for Little Folks and Devotional Stories for Little Folks, too. We read a story as part of our devotional time each morning, though - not so much as an evening read aloud.

I second Suzanne's list as well as the Bethlehem books (my daughter who loves Little House likes the Mitchell Family series, such Five for Victory and the Fairchild Family series).
We've also been enjoying the Doctor Dolittle books for a bit of fun lately.

These lists look good. We always did Charlottes Web, Trumpet of the Swan and Stuart Little after the Little House books. But enjoy that Little House time.....life after Little House is never quite the same! You might like Heidi, too.

We love most of Rumer Goddens books....they are great read alouds (the ones for children that is). I'm thinking the Dragon of Og, and the Dolls House here.
If you are into prairie/early pioneer stuff, you might check out the Courage of Sarah Noble, The Cabin Faced West or Madeline takes command.
We enjoy the recommendations for read alouds from Sonlight, Beyond Five in a Row and also from Story of the World.

Your 4 year old is a little young, but PLEASE put Seven Little Australians on your to read list. It's so beautfully written. My children just loved it.
No one has mentioned Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne.

I second all these read aloud choices, but some of them will be better when your little one is a few years older. Also, The First Four Years little House book is quite "heavy".
One good thing, good books can be "done over" every few years. I look forward to another read through of Little House soon

Is it really? How so? I'm just asking because we are nearing the end of the series ourselves, and I thought we'd read The First Four Years afterwards. My dd5 is especially sensitive, though, and I hate to read anything that will weigh heavily upon her spirit.

I am pretty sure that The First Four Years was never meant to be published. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was published after Laura's death. It was found as a draft. It IS heavy. There's a pregnancy and severe morning sickness and a subsequent stillbirth (or perhaps the baby dies very young, I can't remember exactly, but the whole event is quite heavy), a devastating fire, tremendous and serious illness and more. It also does not have the overall joyful tone of the other books. It does not really belong with them.....though fascinating for adults to read.

Sarah -- I agree with Helene -- The First Four Years is heavy ... we read all the ones up until Laura and Almanzo get married as those aren't as fun for the kids....
Here are the lists I came up with when I was researching read-alouds for Great Yarns for the Close-Knit Family based on input from 4Real ladies: the top 28 suggestions and others also suggested.
Those two lists should keep you busy for a while!

Thanks so much for clarifying about The First Four Years. My Therese is very sensitive and would really struggle with that book it seems. Perhaps I will check it out and read it myself.

Thanks, again, for the heads up on The First Four Years. I have been reading the series to my 5 and 6 year old girls and I'm glad to know about that before we get to the end.
They liked Charlotte's Web, but we had to put down Stuart Little...
I see someone liked the Great Brain - I picked the whole set up at a book sale for pennies and was wondering if they were any good.

I loved the Great Brain series when I was 10ish. They aren't even all in our library anymore, so if you don't like them I'll buy them from you.
I do hope you enjoy! They may bring out the "inner swindler" in some .

Well, we finished These Happy Golden Years last night. At the end my 4yo cried. I told her it was ok, that we would start reading about Caroline's grandma. She cried and protested; she doesn't want to leave the Little House series. So, today I return THGY and check out once again Little House in the Big Woods I am also going to check out The First Four Years for myself.
When she gets over the Little House series my plan is to go on to Melissa Wiley's books. Although, I might also read Heidi, I think she would like that. We've already done Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little.
