Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What is the best age to introduce these books, in their unabridged form, to a girl? Mine is turning 12 this winter and I am thinking maybe she is ready for them? I'm not worried about her reading level (she is pouring through the Redwall books at the moment)...I just want her to really enjoy them rather than have a lot of it go over her head due to age...

I think both of them are written wa-a-ay above Redwall level, but I sure don't think your dd will have any problem with them. They are both written in such a way that rereading them throughout her life will be such a pleasure! Both series are wonderful wintery reads to curl up with while the snow flies.

Oh, I agree with the Redwall assessment...I just meant that she is not deterred by thick books!

I think these books are definitely good reads for a 12 year old. I read them in middle school and loved them, and then I've read them in the past year and loved them but got different things out of them then I did then.

I understand what you mean about not wanting things to go over heads, but I think that 12 would certainly be an appropriate age to introduce these stories for a lifetime of enjoyment!

Plus, I think it is an age when girls start to sort of crave a bit of romance (even the "romance" of keeping a home, raising childre, etc..., not just the boy/girl thing), and these stories really feed that in a healthy way (it isn't super silly in playing up the boy/girl thing). Both Jo and Ann are characters I would love my daughter (if I had one, lol) to "learn" from and aspire towards.

I read those books first about that age, too and loved them. I've re-read them as an adult and still love them!

Has she read any of the other Louisa May Alcott books?

I started younger than that and didn't care as much for "Little Women" but just fell in love with "Eight Cousins" and "Jack and Jill" and probably would have with "An Old-Fashioned Girl" but it wasn't in the set I had.

"Little Men" and "Jo's Boys" and "Under the Lilacs" also are not as lofty a read as "Little Women".

Now I like them all

Well, I'm encouraged and will make sure that some of these end up under the xmas tree this year.

Jodie, I didn't know about Jack and Jill and Eight Cousins. I'll look for them.

Crunchymom, I know exactly what you mean about the romance of being a wife and mother. I think this particular dd is ready for that theme in a book.

Thanks everyone.
