Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have seen glowing reviews of the "Redwall" series on this board. Would this be a suitable series for a read aloud to a 6 and 7 year old (the 7 year old LOVES knights, etc.)

Also, has anyone read the "Castaways of the Flying Dutchman" series? I have not seen it. Would you recommend this series?

Thanks,
Tracey

Mmmmm. Depends on the maturity level of your child. Mine started reading the Redwall series around about 10 or 11. It can get rather violent in places, which super senitive kids might be bothered by. My highly suggestible 7yo son knows about the stories, but we've avoided reading them to him since he is prone to acting out what he reads/sees/hears.

Get the first book and have a read through it yourself. You'll probably love it! Then you'll know better whether or not your kids can handle it.

Blessings,

I read the first book aloud to ds, a sensitve guy, at 9. He took it from there and loved Redwall. When he got scared he'd put the book down until the morning. Sometimes I might have to sit with him while he fell asleep due to scary stuff--only once or twice, really. They are very good books. I tend to think 7 might be too young but my ds is only now OK with Star Wars and other movies.

I am reading the first book now and enjoying it. My 6 yr old (she is very advanced) and 8 yr old daughters are reading through the series. They are pretty sensitive, but just come and talk things through with me when something sad happens. I was hesitant to let them read it, but dh said to let them try. They love the characters and the humor in it. It has created a real family bond.

Just start over! That's what my older ones have done.

We read Redwall last year (and Asmodeus the Snake and Matthias oversized habit are in the Great Yarns for the Close-Knit Family book that I wrote this past year) as a family read-aloud .... mine were 4, 7, and 8 and they ALL loved it.

Yes, it can get violent, but I find the violence appropriate rather than gratuitous ... and the good guys are really good and the bad guys are really bad.

We've had tons of fun with the Redwall books and the Redwall Abbey website has tons of great info for rabbit trails too.....

I just finished reading the whole serie and had at blast, I really miss it. Took 5 months of nursing....
The castaways of the Dutchman are great as well, more travel in time type of books, a little scary and a little bit of haunting, but not bad.

I would wait for the kids to be 10 or so, I think, maybe a mature 8. But I am not there yet...

You can read them yourself, they are highly entertaining!
Have fun!
