Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My ds are keen to read this series and/or see the movie. I've read a few reviews, which seem to sit on the fence. For those who are familiar with Spiderwick, is it suitable for Catholic families?

We listened to the audio on this story done by Mark Hamill - he did an EXCELLENT job on the story and our family wanted to be in the car all the time to finish it - it was that good in our eyes! - or should I say ears!

I read these books to my son and then, he listened to the audio versions read by Mark Hamill on his own. I was ho-hum about these books, but my son 8 year old liked them. We did see the movie and they tried to combine all 5 books into one movie. So, of course, there are changes and some things are condensed, but overall the essence of the story is there. He liked the movie, but didn't love it. I think my son Luke liked the audio version better than the movie.

Several families weighed in on that topic in this thread - Spiderwick. Hope there is helpful information there as well as continuing on this thread.

We have read the series and watched the movie. I liked the books. They weren't literary masterpieces but they it was a good story. There was a clear line between good and evil and good won out in the end.

I didn't like the movie as much. I didn't like how the relationship between Jared and his mom was portrayed. Jared was downright mean amd lippy to his mom. The mom was more like another child rather than an authority figure. The dd acted more like the adult than the mother did. Also, the movie is much scarier than the books.

We liked the books---very imaginative. As said, not literary masterpieces. Fairly "light" reading, easy vocabulary, etc. But I rather liked the drawings in the books and the "field guide" itself is fun.

Did not like the movie. Way too scary. Granted my son is quite sensitive to this sort of thing, but the books just do not have the heavy, dark, scary feeling that the movie did.

Thanks to all who responded. We'll start with the books. As we always do, despite the protesting of my sons.
