Does anyone have any suggestions for books we can connect with the recent Southeast Asia earthquake and tsunami? We're especially interested in
1. Indonesia as a setting
2. Books that show the power of the ocean
3. Themes that include relief workers
We have fiction books:
The Cay
We have non-fiction books:
Children Just Like Me series and
Material World
Thanks for your suggestions!

Hey Wild Woman,
I have a friend from Thailand - I will ask her for recommendations....
It make take a few days - she's due with her first baby - today!
I read your prayer request where your dh said that the relief workers are weary. How is your hubby doing? I'm sure the devastation that we see and read about are nothing compared to seeing it in full. Will you give him our best?
And wow - McIntyre family - what a sacrifice! There's only 16 days (I think) to go!
Thank you all for that!
Love,

Angie,
Have you checked Sonlight? I know they have a year (SL 5) that is just for
non Western cultures... I wonder if there is any book based on Indonesia
there.

Thanks for the lead, Natalia. I just ordered a used copy of "Torches of Joy" by Dekker (sp.) I looked at Sonlight first but couldn't seperate the different sections of Asia. Then I googled and found a link that helped http://www.nucleus.com/~nicola/slgeog.html. (This site appears outdated but was still helpful.)
Love,

Angie, a heads-up about Torches of Joy--there was
some discussion on CCM a couple of years ago
about parts of that book which are offensive to
Catholics. I haven't read it, so I can't speak to
specifics, but I recall something about an
unpleasant portrayal of a priest, a Protestant
missionary "rescuing the lost sheep" from this
priest, and I think also a mention of contraception.
If I remember correctly, this was the book that
launched a very productive dialogue between Karen
?, a member of CCM, and John Holzmann, the
founder of Sonlight, although John did decide in the
end to keep the book in the reading list.
I'll be interested to hear your take on it!

Oh bother and thanks, Lissa . I assumed that I would need to read it carefully, understanding that it didn't come from a Catholic perspective and that the topic of missionary work can be tricky...but yikes! I should have asked here first .

Angie, another thought re your original question--this book isn't related to Indonesia or natural disasters, but the picture book I mentioned in this post, Boxes for Katje, is a beautiful look at a relief effort which benefitted a small Dutch town after WWII.
