Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Families,

Isabella was asking me a question about Virginia Lee Burton and we found this website: http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/mike_mulligan/b iohome.shtml

I don't know if I did that right but we found a neat, little bio on her.

She died on Oct 15, 1968, and since that date is approaching, I thought someone might find it useful.

Peace,

Thanks, Maria! Great stuff here! My little one just loves Mike Mulligan and The Little House. Her stories are just so wonderful.

Have you found this site Women Children's Book Illustrators-Virginia Burton? I just love the collection of artists here! They are some of my favorites!

A wonderful biography of Virginia Lee Burton is Virginia Lee Burton: A Life in Art. I'm reading it right now. It gives so much insight into the people and locations that were the models for the characters and places in the books. There are lots of historical photographs and samples of her work. There are many quotes from other authors/illustrators influenced by her and celebrities who were touched by her books.

I got a kick out of this story about her son Mike. "Burton's son Mike recounted how he and his college roommate once began discussing favorite childhood books. Knowing his friend only as Michael Demetrios, the roommate suddenly said, 'My all-time favorite book as a child was Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.' The roommate's face flashed with total surprise when Michael announced, 'I'm Mike.'"

She really did have a universal appeal.

The book could also be used for art study as it details quite a bit about Burton's design philosophy and techniques.

One book that seems to get lost a bit in her other books, is one she wrote called, Life Story -- it's a great (if not exact ) explanation of the growth of life from millions of years ago right up to a small town with a family (her own). It's a great living book about dinosaurs and development.

My kids loved it last year -- and then imitated the style to narrate their own.....very fun! (and funny )
