We've never read these books although I've heard/seen the name. This weekend we stayed at my sil's and bil's house and my husband and I slept in my nephew's bedroom. He is an avid reader, and had three of these books. I asked him what they were about, and he said they're fantasy/science fiction and hard to describe.
I'd love to hear any opinions on these books.

Well...(imagine me saying this in a long, drawn-out way)...
Eoin Colfer's book Benny and Omar is one of my favorite books for young people. I eagerly scooped up his first Artemis Fowl book at the library, and was pretty disappointed. I am a long-time fantasy reader, so that wasn't the problem. It was Artemis, the central character, who disturbed me. Somehow he did all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons, in a remarkably clever and "cool" way, and came out OK in the end...but he didn't seem to learn anything from his mistakes, and I got the distinct impression that Artemis would be up to his sly tricks in future books. I haven't checked the subsequent volumes to find out, I confess.
I hope someone else found a redeeming quality that I missed. I was truly unhappy that such a promising author could create a character and universe that fell so far short of my expectations.

Nancy, I found that you really had to read books one and two in succession. That is what I did - and, hey, Artemis redeems himself in book two. 
Of course, Holly, the fairy, is also a good charatcer in book one - willing to sacrifice for others.
The books are rather clever and funny - but I always suggest that one and two be read together, in order to see the development of Artemis' character.

So, do you think it would be okay for me to buy the latest one, book four, for my nephew who is 12, as a Christmas gift? Or would you get a different book or just a gift card to a bookstore? The latest is called _Opan Deception_, BTW.

Well, we have read The Opal Deception and think it would be fine for a gift, seeing that he has read the others.
But, seeing you haven't read it yourself, you may prefer to give a book card. I know my kids love getting those and have fun making their own selection!

Bumping this up...looking for more info on the Artemis Fowl series.
I haven't had time to read them and my 10 year old (mature for his age) is eating them up. He has read the first book and The Lost Colony (free book from the library reading program). So is there anything "good" in Artemis? Does he turn good in the second and succeeding books?
I keep reading the book jackets and seeing words like "criminal genius", and "criminal lifestyle", and "...any goodness he had grudgingly learned..." (that from Opal Deception). 
What kind of character is he? Are we talking another Harry Potter here where the line between good and evil is blurred?
We just checked out Opal Deception from the library but am holding it aside till I get some more input.

We haven't read the books. This site and the comments below the post give some details. She mentions as being for teens. Another Christian site said teens and preteens. Focus on the Family's review of book 1 and book 2. Hopefully someone here can give more help!
