Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

yes - we used it this year and it is very good and very thorough. It is challenging and offers great books to read. You do questions and vocab with every book during the week. there is a paper due at the end of each week on what they have read plus a final exam on each book with a 3 page paper due at the end of the book.

I hope this helps you

Thank you so much - this is very helpful! Abby really wants to do it. One question - did you register just for the course or do a full Kolbe enrollment? - I am considering the full enrollment with many of my own things - they are very flexible.

I used it for 9th grade (picked hs level novels) and was very very happy with it. I did not enroll. It was completely doable on my own. We didn't do the weekly writing assignments though since we had so much writing going on in other subjects.

I have my kids enrolled in Kolbe for simplicity sake for myself. Here in Florida you have to a portfolio reviewed by a Florida Certified teacher at the end of each school year. Having them enrolled and having those daily course plans makes my portfolio and planning for the year a breeze. They are very flexible and I tailor them for each child's needs.

I just looked at the book list for this and am a bit confused. How does the Junior High Literature course fit in with full Kolbe enrollment? Is it included in the price of enrollment for the year? And how does that work if you want to use it for an enrolled high schooler?

I'm laughing again Marilyn. You beat me to this question...Sweet Pea likes this literature program too! I wish we were closer and then the girls could have a discussion group too with the program! Wouldn't that be great?

I'm thinking of just ordering the syllabus and doing it on my own like Books. Then I can assign writing papers at her pace (and mine.) I like the idea of having the question prompts so I can point out things like 1st person/2nd person and other literary techniques. I'm definitely going to stretch the program over at least 2 years - maybe 3 because we do ALOT of reading with history, and this year Sweet Pea's history reading is much meatier.

But...it's pricey...and I'm still waffling. I'm leaning towards the program though. I can't wait to hear what you decide to do with Abby.

Irene, if you decide to use it for high school, you can. That's Kolbe. They give you the materials and you use them the way that supports you. I have it if you'd like to see it. I actually have lots of Kolbe things now that you might want to look over IRL if you are considering Kolbe for high school. You are welcome to borrow them for a week or so.

Irene - is part of your full enrollment but if you do not enroll it is $125 by itself. I feel it is well worth enrollment for what I get but it is definitely up to the individual family.

I used it, but loosely -- as always!

I do think it's a very nice literature program.

I have spoken at length with the folks at Kolbe. I want a bit more structure for middle school - I even considered Seton - but my dd is not at all keen. The full enrollment cost is $260 I think. One of the reasons I am considering enrollment is that I would like somebody else to grade Abby's writing - just to check that I am on the right track. They seem very flexible - and may be a solution to my "transcript fear"

Also - I love writing my own plans - but I am feeling a little tired and I may use some of Kolbe's other lesson plans eg Saxon 87 and the Latina Christiana II schedule.

I am also looking into this program. Are the students reqd. to read all of the books,or could I decide? The reason I ask is that a couple of the books seem to be more suited for a H.S. level.I don't mean the reading level, but the subjects discussed.

I don't know how Kolbe uses it, but it is designed to be used very mix and match. We used the poetry unit "as is" for 9th grade as ds has not had a lot of poetry in the past. We used the short story component but I added in some more stories and found notes for them online. Then I chose novels (Tom Sawyer and Robinson Crusoe) and a Shakespeare play and we called it "Intro. to literature". We moved through the short story lesson plans much quicker than its scheduled, but everything else we used pretty much as written (well, I changed up the tests a bit, too).

Mary - I just realized yesterday that the enrollment does not include grading of assignments. Is there help provided to the students on HOW to write the reports and how easy is it for the parent to make sure they are writing in a correct style? I know Seton gives a lot of hints with writing in their programs

Thanks for your help.

I would call them - I know you can turn in work for feedback, but i just do not use that part of my enrollment. They are very helpful so if you call and ask about getting feedback on writing assignments I am sure they will let you know. My understanding is that they will go over it if you request it but it is not done automatically. I believe that normally you grade their work yourself but if you need help they provide it.

Hope that helps

Thanks Mary - but do the lesson plans themselves come with enough guidance on writing?

Boy - you know they do a lot of writing and with the English - Voyages In English - they get so much guidance on writing that when all put it together they are all set.

Grading for me is based on the answer key they give with the course plans.   In the answer key they tell you what the paper should include about the book- the main points. I also correct them on grammar, spelling, etc. My boys struggle with writing so sometimes we only do the final paper instead of one for every week etc. they really get burnt out quickly with too much writing. The lesson plans do not have any more guidance than that - is this what you are looking for?

Willa - In what way did you use it loosely? I'd like to use the program loosely in my home, meaning we may use the program, but not all the time, and definitely not all the papers. I do want to discuss a lot of the literature orally. How did it look in your home? I have a reluctant writer, but a voracious reader.

And...could someone give me an idea of the specifics contained within the syllabus/lesson plans? If you're not enrolled in Kolbe and are looking for a guide to offer helps, insight into a book or passage, question prompts - is this going to provide that? Is it worth $100?

I wonder if Kolbe would send me a sample lesson to look at? Think I might try emailing them.
