Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Because the boards are closing tomorrow for the moderator's retreat I thought I'd better give you all a heads-up on a new project I'm offering at my blog:

Author Fiesta

This is a reviving of the old Book Fiesta. Each month we're going to "discover" a new author/illustrator and, in the process, your child will be introduced to a host of literary talent and inspiration while compiling a nice library binder.

Pages will be available on the website to download and place in their binder. Right now there is a cover sheet to print out. You just need to purchase a 3-ring binder and you're set to go.

This Thurs., May 1, the first author will be announced.

Let the guessing begin!. Your child might win a free book.

This is one of our VERY FAVORITE memories (and most successful in terms of keeping up with it )! I guess it's time for a new batch of my readers to enjoy it!

Thanks!

Cay, can you explain a bit more about what types of activities will be done with the books? And what age group this will be geared towards?
Thanks!

The featured author for May is Patricia Polacco.

I'm hoping to get a bio sheet on her up either today or this weekend.

Theresa, I would say this can be open to any age groups...even high school. Gee, some moms I know might enjoy it.

I'll try to get around to answering your other question sometime today. Promise.

Oh Cay! We just finished reading all but the 5 Christmas books ... we've had so much fun going thru all her books and her autobiography for kids,Firetalking, is excellent ... we read that after reading all the picture books but you could do it as the starter too.

Here's a blog post about all the 42! picture books we read with a short summary to whet your appetites!

I just got home from the library, and I picked out more Patricia Polacco books to add to our big pile.
I figured we would read some at the library because I am reaching my limit as to how many books I can have out at one time.

Well, the first book I choose was Pink and Say, I didn't read the book jacket, just dived in. Well, we were all by the end of this story. It was beautifully written, but I just wasn't ready for the emotion or I wouldn't have read it at the library.

Cay, thanks for starting us off on this wonderful journey into the Polacco books.

That's why I brought 'em home! We can have tons out at a time (300 I think) but can only request 30 so I requested some on Thomas' card too ! And Joann, just so you know -- we cried through MANY of them. That's why I like her writing -- it's from the heart!

We just watched the short biography video-Dream Keeper and what a treat! We were very blessed that our library system owns a copy of this.

The kids really enjoyed it, especially when they noticed illustrations of stories that we have read.

I was very impressed by the many images behind her as she gave her interview, including one of Our Blessed Mother holding Jesus-it was remarkable. She had to be very consious of these images and wanted to make sure they were seen in the video.

Joann in Firetalker, Polacco explains that when her two children were young she worked to restore icons ... so she is an iconographer. A really cool thing for those who have kids with dyslexia is that so does Polacco -- and it wasn't diagnosed until she was 14! But she went on to get a PhD in Art History! Pretty cool, eh?

Cay - thank you for yet another great idea - I discovered this on Saturday - we love Patricia Polacco - but had only read 4 or 5 of her books. I got about 20 more out of the library on Saturday and we are going to be having a wonderful week.

I read The Lemonade Club yesterday - made me cry and cry.

All my kids from the 4 year old to the 11 year old are enjoying the books - and the baby is happy to sit listening (and occasionally chew a book!)

You're welcome, Marilyn. We have fun over here doing this.

There is now a quote by Patricia Polacco for copywork today as well as an author research sheet which can be used for all featured authors.

Is your child's binder ready? It's easy.
Just buy (or find around the house) a 3-ring binder and download/print the colorful front cover to place in front.

Stay tuned...I'll have a biography Q/A sheet on the site later today.

Enjoy!

Wonderful! Wonderful!

I'd love to see what quotes your children take from these books. The quotes alone found in picture books are life lessons in and of themselves.

Remember how many quotes Laura Ingalls Wilder used throughout her series, quotes she heard from Pa and Ma. Those quotes stay with you.

I'd encourage you to take any great quotes you read in these books and have your child copy it on a sheet of paper to insert in his notebook. Then print a small image of the book cover it came from and have him tape/glue the cover on the same sheet as the quote. That's how we do it and the children remember the book and the lesson learned. [ETA: Really I cut/paste a book cover on a new document form and type the lines for them to write on, then I print a sheet out, but this is another way you can do it if you don't play around with computer documents.]

I wanted to add...today would be a good day to let your child browse Polacco's website in preparation of the Q/A sheet. This sheet will allow your child to do some safe researching on the web.

Here are our quotes:

Pink and Say
"They's things worse than death, child. But you got nothin' to fear....When it's your time, the sweet Lord'll send a hummin' bird to fly your soul to heaven."

The Lemonade Club
"And if life hands you a lemon or two today-and you all know how sour lemons are-...Just add water and sugar and what do you have?...Lemonade"

Chicken Sunday
"Well, then, you have great courage to be here. Chutzpah, you have chutzpah!"

We read John Philip Duck this afternoon, and then we went on you-tube and found actual clips of the actual ducks marching into the fountain at the Peabody Hotel.

I just posted this on my blog. I chose one clip, but if you go to youtube you can find many other clips.

Fun stuff!
The post.
