Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have any experience with a series of books called the Mantlemass Chronicles by Barbara Willard (authoress of If All the Swords in England, Augustine Came to Kent and Son of Charlemagne)? I came across mention of them when I was searching for the above books for next year's lessons.

I am not even positive that it is the same Barbara Willard. Amazon does have all the books linked under one author. But Amazon is known to not be perfect.

The books in Mantlemass are (at least some of them):

Lark and the Laurel
Sprig of Bloom
Cold Wind Blowing
The Eldest Son
The Iron Lily
Flight of Swans
Keys of Mantlemass

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, it is the same Barbara Willard. The only one I have read is The Lark and the Laurel, and I didn't like it enough to read the rest - though I know other people who have loved the whole series. It was a while ago, so I can't remember the details. I think there was a fair amount of innocent romance, and there were some historical inaccuracies that bugged me. I would say these are more for older children - maybe twelve and up?

There is an extensive, positive review of the series here. You need to scroll down to find the section on Barbara Willard.

Thanks, Kathryn. I was thinking of it for a 10 year old boy, so I think I'll pass. But maybe I'll read them myself some day!
