Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi everyone. I haven't posted here before, though I visit daily and devour 4Real blogs. You ladies are such an inspiration to me. I wish I could give you all a big hug for all the encouragement you've given my little homeschool.

I am planning to do a Little House on the Prairie unit with my 4 and 6 year old daughters next month (using the picture book series)-- does anybody have any ideas to share?

Thanks!
Sarah (mom to 3, ages 6,4, and 2)

Oh, not enough time now to answer thoroughly as the boards will be closing for Sunday in just a few minutes!

So quickly, this is such a cool idea, Sarah! I love the picture book series for that age. Almost all of those little books focus on something that could be turned into a craft or cooking event.

Sugar Snow - get little maple sugar candies to sample, catch snowflakes on your tongues (if you live in snowy area)
A Little House Birthday - make a simple rag doll, find some fiddle music to listen too, play/sing "Pop Goes the Weasel"

We'll all have to jump back in with more ideas when the forums reopen.

Here is the main entry with my unit ideas listed. I hope something here helps you!

Be sure to click on the homeschool share units, cause that is where I'm getting a lot of my ideas! There is an entire unit on the maple sugaring theme!! :)

A couple fun books for projects are:
My Little House Crafts Book
My Little House Sewing Book

I also have the Little House Cookbook. It is fun to make the recipes that are mentioned in the books. I can't remember all the foods in the picture books, but I do know that you definitly have pancake men in one of them. Also general staples of the time like cornbread would be good to get an idea of what Laura ate. Making butter (glass jar method) is great.

We just made the butter by shaking in a jar yesterday! It was awesome! I just love when lessons like this come together! There are pictures on my blog if you are interested. :) It was lots of fun!

I have most of this series (picture books) and just love them. I've been wanting to do a unit study type thing with my 6 yr old DD. I'd love to see some of the ideas you come up with Sarah

I recently got the craft book and cookbook and they are great!
And don't forget the paper dolls

I just found this in my bookmarks-a unit study just for the picture book series:

My First Little house unit

I have not used it yet, but it has some good ideas.

Ooh- thanks- I didn't know about the paper dolls. I ordered some. I'll post some updates here as we go along. My girls are already calling each other "Mary" and "Laura," so we are off to a good start!!

I didn't realize there were 2 cookbooks until I clicked on the other link...
Mine is specifically for this series:
cookbook

Even though this one says it's hardcover, mine is softcover and I got it for $1!
