Nice article, Cay. My daughter REALLY didn't like Elsie Dinsmore, my son LOVES Henty and none of us have been able to get into the Little House books (I know, it's shocking! ) though we all like Melissa Wiley's books since our heritage is Scottish too

We read all of the Elsie Dinsmore books and my kids could not stand her until she grew up in the books. As a child she was extremley whiney and constantly crying. It really got on my daughter's nerves. They do get better as they go.
We are LHOP fans though!
I am still waiting to get my hands on a few Henty books to try those out as well.
Right now we are still slowly working our way through the Redwall series.

Don't feel bad, I haven't even heard of Elsie Dinsmore and we've been homeschooling for 5 1/2 years!
Thanks for the article Cay, I love to hear about those growth percentages, 15% per year wow!!

I keep waiting for at least one of my dc to fall in love with the Little House books and it hasn't happened yet! I'm always suggesting them and have read parts aloud, but no takers! I loved them; it's just like my whole collection of Nancy Drew books gathering dust. Oh well, to each his own. Ann in Tucson

On the LHOP books - try them on tape. Even my 6-year-old twins (boy & girl) loved them. Not too many can resist "Farmer Boy"...

I know there have been some mentions here and there of particular books of Henty's that are anti-Catholic; does anyone have a list of them? I'd like to try a few with ds this year, if some of them are OK.

I think the Henty books to be wary of are those set during and after the Reformation (16th and 17th centuries). I tried reading one Henty book once and couldn't get past the first few pages!

Old topic, but I've just read the first two Elise books and I'm incensed!! Elsie's complete meekness is not a desirable Christian virtue, not to the degree she takes it. Her father's cruelty and coldness to her, his expectation of her complete and blind obedience to her.
I know concerns have been raised about the anti-Catholic sentiments which was just one more 'nail in the coffin' it was actually completely pathetically ridiculous. These are two books going in the bin!

The Henty books are out of copyright so you can find a number of them for free at Gutenburg.
