Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I borrowed this book from the library and have been reading it non-stop ever since: How to Get Your Child to Love Reading: For Ravenous and Reluctant Readers Alike -- it is a great book for ideas on all things reading. She has lists for evrything and altho her tastes acan sometimes veer a bit heavily on the pc/all one world kind of thing , she has great synopses for all ages. I told my dh that this book would be a great birthday or Xmas present for yours truly!

She also has a web site called Planet Esme -- a continuation of the book with lots of reading suggestions (including math books) and lots of stuff.

I'm having a great time with this book, can you tell

Mary,
I bought her book after seeing her on Book TV.
She is as motivated, energetic a speaker as she is a writer.

I could see children learning 4 Realin her classroom.

I read somewheres that she had various odd educational experiences while growing up. One school (in NY or Chicago-I'm too lazy to go look ) was very unschoolish. The dc could either sit and do nothing all day (if they chose) or do math or art or whatever. It was very free-thinking, free-floating.

I've often wondered what her opinion was of hsing.

Cay:

In her book, she does mention what would work in a hs'ing setting so she must assent to it somewhat.....

She only has one child who is definitely in public school and she is "preaching" from the standpoint of going into a classroom. That said, her book lists are wonderful to check out -- I've gotten a couple from the library that she mentions and they really are great.

Her web-site is much more up-to-date -- seems she's opened a bookstore in Chicago -- so that might give you a better handle on what she's up to....

Blessings and happy reading

I've noticed this book on our library shelf a few times but always had my hands too full to grab it and take a look. Now, I am definitely intrigued. I am gathering booklists feverishly to plan for the school year and look for Christmas gifts.

Marybeth:

Check out her website -- she has lots of lists and info there too! Especially if next time you go to GET the book at the library, someone will have beaten you to it (happens to me all the time ).

Blessings,

Mary,

I did place a hold on the book through our library system. I plan to scour the website sometime in the next few days. I noticed during my first quick glance she had something donated from a local homeschooling group to her store in Chicago. I would be very interested in attending a workshop offered there. Hopefully it will happen!!
