Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I recently wrote a post on my blog reviewing some of the books we listened to on our trip to Wisconsin. I called it, "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."
http://www.liliesofhope.com/doodleacres/2007/11/09/the-good- the-bad-and-the-ugly-books-on-tapecd-from-our-trip/

I'd love to hear some of your suggestions for good unabridged books for our next road trip.

I commented on your blog, but I'll add it here too because I'm always searching 4Real for ideas! :)

Our favorites are:
- any of the Narnia books
- any of the Litte House series
-The Penderwicks (huge hit here, we listen to it often)
-The audio dramatized version of Little Women by Focus on the Family

That's all I can think of for *favorites* but we love audiobooks and listen to them often.

Oh, I forgot my 4year old's favorite - The Pokey Little Puppy! They have listened to it so often my 2yo can quote it along with the tape. It's enough to send my 10 yo screaming from the room.

I second Narnia. In fact, our copies of the CD's arrived in the mail today, in anticipation of our Thanksgiving road trip to Mississippi! We like The Wind in the Willows, as well. The Charlotte's Web narrated by the author is great.

We are big E. Nesbit fans. My favorite is "Five Children and It" by Recorded Books, narrated by Virginia Leishman. She is a wonderful storyteller and I think all of E. Nesbit's books through Recorded Books are told her. We've probably listened to that story 20 times now.

We've been listening to the All-of-a-kind Family books on tape recently. My dds love them. The "reader" has a great Jewish and Italian accent and has the personalities of the daughters down perfectly.

Here are a couple others we've finished up recently:

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle (over and over and over... )
Pinnochio
Courage of Sarah Noble

Our vote is for The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg! It's about a sister and brother who "run away" and live in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, solving a big mystery about a statue by Michaelangelo. Wonderful voices!

We've read all of the Narnia books but only listened to the Lion, the Withch and the Wardrobe. It was wonderful!!!

Thanks for the other ideas. I just downloaded the Penderwicks from our library system. I'm anxious to listen to it with the children!!!

OK...I have a list of books that have won the Newbery Award and are available on tape here. Typical me--it has not been updated in a while. Many of these are old car-ride friends!

We love the Swallows and Amazons books for long car rides.   We have also enjoyed BBC radio plays of David Copperfield and A Tale of Two Cities. A few Nesbit stories are also available from Blackstone Audio...we love The Enchanted Castle, The Magic World, and others.

The kids loved Les Miserable and Jane Eyre, even when they were as young as 6. My rule of thumb is that I must be able to tolerate the listen, too! If I fall asleep, ummm...not for the car ride!

Great suggestions already...

I would add Charlotte's Web or anything else by E.B. White. Charlotte's Web read by the author himself is simply wonderful. One of our favorites so far!

We picked up Caddie Woodlawn and The Moffats tonight at the library, for our road trip tomorrow. DH got us Beethoven's 9th as well.

We loved listening to "Nurse Matilda" in the car.(we found the german version "Nanny Matilda" in the local library) I think dh and I laughed more than the kids.

My girls love listening to "Despereaux"...I must admit I have not yet heard the cd.

We just finished Charlie and the Chocolate Factory read by Eric Idle!!!! It's SO excellent with him reading this!

My mom and I LOVED it so much that we've been spontaneously breaking into loud bursts of "The Golden Ticket....I got the Golden Ticket!" complete with our lame British accents! The girls loved it too, of course! I told dh that he has to take it with him on his next road trip..... ....he thought I was kidding! I most certainly WAS NOT!

We spend lots of time in the car- audio books save the day.

Speaking of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, there are tons of Roald Dahl books on CD- The Fantastic Mr. Fox, The BFG- wonderful stories.

Another one we like is the Dulaire's book of Greek Mythology. Or the Winnie the Pooh books.

We adore Mrs. Piggle Wiggle- it was written by the same woman who wrote The Egg and I, I found out. Hilarious stuff! We can hardly have a dinner without someone referencing the mumbler's cure (pleeeeese paaaassss the buterrrrrr.)

We loved the *book* The Penderwicks, but when I borrowed the CD for a long car trip, we only got about five minutes into it before my kids were begging me to turn it off! The narrator's voice was driving them bananas

I really have trouble *doing voices* and accents when I read aloud, so we save books that involve lots of that kind of thing to listen to *someone else* reading aloud as books on tape for long car rides. Based on that, we have listened with great enjoyment to The Secret Garden, The Wheel on the School, and Redwall.

Peace,
Nancy

My husband and I listened to Old Yeller a couple months ago. It was really good!

And, Heidi.
