We recently finished listening to The Tale of Desperaux in the car. I know it was Cay that first brought this book to my attention, but it took us awhile to work it in. It's great for the car because it's written in many short chapters so we were able to listen to whole chapters on even our shorter commutes.
Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend it. We miss the characters! I've found the kids still talking about them. The book also lends itself to a end-of-story dinner (which you'll discover when you read it. ).
Blessings ~

we LOVED this book too! i was looking for quick Valentine gifts for the kids a couple of years ago and found it at Wal-mart in the book aisle, of all places. (cynical me and WM, I find it very rare to find quality things, esp. books, there -- so it was a wonderful surprise)

This is one of my most favourite children's books. We love Desperaux! I consider this book a classic.

Be sure to check out The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, also by Dicamillo.

Our family listened to both of these on cd also, and enjoyed them. I would just caution those with sensitive children that the family life and treatment of one of the girls in The Tale of Desperaux are not very nice. For example, her father sells her, and she eventually has trouble hearing b/c her ears have been boxed so much. Overall, nothing grimmer than some fairy tales, but you might want to preread if you wonder about the reaction of some of your children.

Bringing this back up as the movie comes out on Friday and thanks to a strong recommendation to read the book from Maureen Witmann, we spent the day (yep, the whole day) reading the whole book! Definitely worth a read if y'all haven't read it yet!

Thanks for the reminder...I put the book on hold at the library. That should give all of my readers a chance to finish the book before the movie comes to the "cheap" theater!
I imagine that will be around February!
Happy reading...or viewing...
Peace.

I was able to see a preview/premier of the movie this last weekend (it comes out on Friday). As usual, it is quite different from the book. They have added major storyline changes to make it more exciting for today's audiences. (I guess the story was just too sweet . . .) Anyway, the movie is well done. The themes of the story come through as well as a really well done theme of forgiveness bringing healing. Two scary parts to watch out for, but overall a good movie for the family!!
My 11-year-old dd said she liked the movie better because Roscuro is more obviously redeemed. He is moved by forgiveness to overturn a wrong he has done. That sets off a chain reaction of forgiveness that ends in the healing of the kingdom. I have discussion questions for the movie written by Laura Berquist and Mary Pride if anyone is interested in them--PM me for them. The questions don't address the forgiveness theme, which I think is too bad, but as in reading, no two viewers take away the same meaning. Perhaps I'm just in a forgiveness frame of mind these days.

We recently finished the book, too. We really enjoyed it and are going to see the movie for Dominic's birthday next month.
