Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello all, I am looking for ideas of different poets to include for a poetry study. We just finished Robert Frost. I like sticking with a poet for about 6 weeks, so I would be looking for poets's who wrote 6 good children's poems. My dd is 9. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. The librarian recommended Eugene Field. I have the book The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat, which is actually The Duel. Thanks, in advance.

Perhaps A.A. Milne? He wrote Now We Are Six and When We Were Very young.

We adore Edward Lear! The Owl and the Pussy Cat is long, but he has lots of short funny limericks too.

Also, Shel Silverstein....

"I'm Nobody, Who are you?" is a collection for children of Emily Dickinson's more accessible poems.

What ages do you have in mind?

Robert Louis Stevenson! He can send you on rabbit trails to Hawaii or about Bl. Damien too.

I second the vote for Robert Louis Stevenson. Also, my daughter really enjoyed some poems from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow last year (3rd grade). She memorized The Village Blacksmith and The Children's Hour.

We got our selections from Laura Berquist's The Harp & Laurel Wreath.

Personally, I have always liked the poetry of Longfellow.

This year my 13 year old has been focusing on Yeats. I believe last year she spent a lot of time with Tennyson.

Valerie, have you seen the poetry series:
Poetry for Young People?

Your library might carry them and it could be a way to find out which poets interest your children.

Hi again Valerie
I thought of your question again this morning after reviewing poetry with my children. I frequently use The Harp and Laurel Wreath by Laura Berquist.
She has several poems by Stephen Vincent Benet that Mother of Divine Grace School recommends around 4th or 5th grade.

I did a quick poetry search for his poems on line and didn't come up with any. Here's a website about Benet.

I also like Classic Poetry: An Illustrated Collection. If I remember correctly, this book includes a little biographical infomation about the poets.

We love poetry. In addition to the above, we enjoy Emily Dickinson, John Ciardi, Sara Teasdale, Ogden Nash, James Whitcomb Riley (love Little Orphant Annie), and Walter de la Mare. My teenage dd's still recite Somewhere and The Cupboard.

Also, you might check out Ambleside Online for their poet rotation.

Thanks ladies. I've been going through the lists, links and books you all have mentioned. I don't think I'll be at a loss for a poet to study ever again. This will be a resource for me for quite a while.

Thanks again, Valerie
