Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone used/bought/looked at Stories of the Saints by Siegwart Knijpenga? It says that there are more than 30 stories retold by the author for ages 7-12. Is it worth the $20? Is it illustrated -- I really like Waldorf-inspired soft-watercolor type illustrations. Are the stories presented from a Christian viewpoint or as nice, fairy tales?

Mary - I saw this book years ago and I don't remember exactly why - but I didn't like it - I do remember thinking it was not worth the money that was being asked.
I wish I could be more exact. I don't remember many illustrations and that is one of things I look for - so maybe they were more black and white?

I felt I could do better at my local public library - so I would say to skip this one.

I personally really like stories about saints that have a quality of legend to them - like the books by Eva Betz at Neumann Press like this.

These are terribly expensive but I splurged one year and bought the set - never regretted it - but I do wish they were a little less expensive. They are a nice quality though - the kind of book I could see keeping for my grandchildren.

Thanks for the feedback Donna -- I can't get this book thru the library and really hesitate spending that much sight unseen (if it was from Ignatius or somewhere, maybe I wouldn't be so picky).

I think I'll pass and use other saints' stories. Those Neumann Press ones are lovely but expensive ... maybe I could get our parish to start buying books like this for a library and then I could borrow them

I have some ideas for saints stories.

Joan Windham weaves great saint stories.

And I had just recently found Brother Wolf, Sister Sparrow by Eric Kimmel that incorporates legends about saints and animals.

Many stories and legends of saints originally come from The Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine, which several versions can be found online. These would be perfect examples for the parent to read the original story and retell it, since these are written in medieval English.

There is an OOP book by Daniel-Rops called Golden Legend of Young Saints which might be worth digging up. The author retells the Golden Legend of several saints when they were younger.

Thanks Jenn! My library even has the Kimmel book so that will fit nicely....

Mary, there are some Saints stories online at MainLesson. I am not sure if they have printed copies of these or not. There is one Saints book there that is written by Andrew Lang's wife.

Very interesting. It looks like the Baldwin Project's book The Book of Saints and Heroes is the same as the reprint by Sophia Institute Press, although one says Mrs. Lang and the other says Andrew Lang. I don't have the actual book, so I would be curious to see if they are one and the same.
