Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have recently read a great book that contains a wonderful story line chock full of great things to glean from it. However, it does contain some language that would not be ok to say in our house. Should a child read this book?

How do other families approach this? Do you say it is not worth it and that there are plenty of other good books? Do you read it out loud so the language can be talked about? What do you say? Does the child need to be a certain age before they may read the book?- what age?

I am sure many people here handle it differently so I would love to hear how you approach this issue and why.

Thanks

I think you want to be able to trust the child not to repeat the words, and to be able to understand the important points in the story without being distracted by them.

Your oldest is only 10. I wouldn't burden him with this yet.

If it is a really good book in all other respects, I would most likely make it a family read aloud and edit as I read, so that the children don't encounter the questionable words. I've done that with some books. An example for young children is to change the word "stupid" to "silly" or something like that. At other times I'll read it out loud as is, and stop to say something about why the author used that word there and remind the girls that we don't use language like that in our family.

What Bridget and Irene said. Depending on the words, we have allowed the older ones to read. They know what is appropriate and what isn't. _And- We read aloud and edit whenever necessary. If our older boys are reading to the younger set, they know to edit words like "stupid." It gets interesting when two different people read the same book to a litte person and "edit" in different ways.

Thanks ladies! As the kids are starting to get older we are coming up on many more decisions to make. I always like hearing how other families decide.
