Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We just got done listening to Farmer Boy on CD. My 8 yr old son absolutely LOVED it and was transfixed each time we listened to it. We had some great discussions about differences in life style, the value of money, and farming.
He's very anxious to hear more about Almanzo and was so disappointed to hear there was not not another book about him (at least as a boy).
What other books would you suggest that are similar? They can be read alouds or readers.
thanks
Ann

We read Farmer Boy this year and then we did Trumpet of the Swan. My boys, ages 9 and 11 and my 7 year old daughter enjoyed both books very much!

My son enjoyed all the Little House books - they are really not "girly."

We also heartily recommend "Henry Huggins" series and actually all Beverly Cleary books (Ramona, Mouse and Motorcycle etc.)

Yes, my son loved Farmer Boy and then went on to read all of the Little House books. Believe it or not in the end his favorite was not Farmer Boy, but the Banks of Plum Creek, which is my favorite, too!
I second the Henry Huggins books. Ds loved Henry and Ribsy and Ramona!
You might also try Swallows and Amazons as a read-aloud.
I know there was a thread a long while back about our favorite books for boys. You might try searching for that for more ideas!

We are reading all the Little House books and just starting Banks of Plum creek this week. He really enjoyed Little House on the Prairie and hearing how they built the house and Indians were exciting.

I forgot about Henry Huggins. I'll have to get that.
He enjoyed Homer Price too but the sequel was too slow for him.

We have Trumpet of the Swan but have not read that yet so we'll read that soon too.
I'll check out the others mentioned and look for that other thread.
Thanks!

I agree that Little House is not in the least girly. We are reading Caddie Woodlawn right now, too, and that is not girly either.
