Hi, I am wondering if there is a resource book about how to teach poetry and the different kinds of poetry. I am hoping that the kids and I can jump into poetry this summer but I would like a reference for myself. I have lots of poetry books that are just poems but I am hoping to find something to help with the teaching of it understanding style and such things....
Thanks so much! God bless,

A Child's Introduction to Poetry by Michael Driscoll is what we're using.
It comes complete with a CD for "Listen while You Learn about the Magic Words that Have Moved Mountains, Won Battles and Made Us Laugh and Cry"
It goes through various forms of poetry as well as various poets. It not only gives you poems but also discusses them and gives cartoon caricatures for fun learning.
(Click on the link above and then on the book cover and you can look inside the book)

If you want a resource for yourself, X. J. Kennedy's "An Introduction to Poetry" is my favorite; and Joseph Tsujimoto's "Teaching Poetry to Adolescents" is fun.

Thanks ladies! I will check into each of them! Cay, that looks good! And yes Michelle, I need a resource for me so I will check into the suggestions you have offered. Poetry seems ages....ages....ago since I did any!
God bless,

One I had to get in college that seemed good though I haven't read it in years now and not with a mind to homeschooling was "Rose, Where Did You Get That Red? Teaching Great Poetry to Children" by Kenneth Koch

One we read last year, that we REALLY liked, was by Brian Cleary, Rainbow Soup. I liked this one because it's a poetry book written for kids (very SILLY poems) but it also covers most of the types of poems and has little explanations with some of the more esoteric. It was a big hit last year!

My favorite book on poetry is Rhyme's Reason. It describes poetic form in the form it is describing. In other words, when describing a sonnet, the author uses sonnet form.
We have also loved using IEW's Developing Linguistic Patterns Through Poetry Memorization (mouthful!) for the poetic content. If you like the Suzuki method, consider this Suzuki poetry.
