A dear friend has a daughter who is beginning her senior year at William and Mary. In the last year, she's undergone a dramatic transformation. She's passionatley interested in "women's studies." She's begun to dress in a very -un-feminine manner, is spouting feminist theory anytime anyone is listening and choosing some questionable friends. The "good thing" is that she is easily influenced. This is a good thing because we think we can get her to at least read some of "the other side." So, I told her mom I'd pose the question to you. Can you help me gather some books that refute the feminist philosophy?

Elizabeth,
Fr. Francis Martin has a book published by Eerdmans called "The Feminist Question", also Regine Pernoud has a book, "Women in the Days of Cathedrals" where she demonstrates how women in the Middle Ages had it better than many women today despite the huge women's lib. movement. She has also written a great biography of St. Hildegaard of Bingen, who is a saint usually embraced for being an early "feminist" by some women in the Church.
What about the writings of our beloved Edith Stein?
Hope that helps!

This may sem counter-intuitive, but I've found the website Feminists for Life very helpful in this regard. In particular, the articles about feminist history are quite illustrative of how feminism, which was originally about making life better for women and children, has changed to our modern day "I'm too good to waste my days raising children" philosophy.
Good luck!

Good recommendation. I think we should make a distinction between "feminism" and "radical feminism". Radical feminists distort the noble desire to help women and instead treat men and children like "the enemy".

Elizabeth,
May I suggest Essays on Woman by Edith Stein? Now I'm only at the beginning. However, I must say, she is a feminist in the good Catholic way. Edith Stein refers to Our Lady as a role model for "authentic feminism" quite often.
I am learning so much from this book. I've had a lot of "A-ha!" moments. I highly recommend this book to all of you ladies.

Two cheers for The War Against Boys. LOVE this book, and so glad I read it, but its premise is not primarily about Feminism per se as it is about how feminism is destroying boys in public schools in our nation. Very enlightening.

Hi Elizabeth,
I thought you might find these secular suggestions helpful. They aren't Catholic books, but present a case against radical feminist views. They were suggested to me by Mary Hasson when I was putting the Phases of Womanhood conference booklist together. I haven't read any of them myself, but some sound like they would be good to help convince someone who is being affected by secular society's views on feminism.
On Womens' Issues:
** What our Mothers Didn’t Tell Us: Why Happiness Eludes the Modern Woman, by Danielle Crittenden, Touchstone, NY, (1999)
**Who Stole Feminism: How Women Have Betrayed Women , by Christina Hoff Sommers, Touchstone, NY (1994)
** Pornified: How Pornography is Transforming our Lives, Our Relationships, and Our Families, by Pamela Paul, Times Books, Henry Holt and Co, NY (2005)
**Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and The Rise of Raunch Culture, by Ariel Levy, Free Press, (2005)
On Motherhood:
** Maternal Desire: On Children, Love, and the Inner Life, by Daphne de Marneffe, Little Brown and Company, NY (2004)
** The Price of Motherhood: Why the Most Important Job in the World is Still the Least Valued, Ann Crittenden, Metropolitan Book, Henry Holt and CO, NY (2001)
** The Two Income Trap Why Middle Class Mothers and Fathers are Going Broke, by Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi, Basic Books, (2003)
** Creating a Life: Professional Women and The Quest for Children, by Sylvia Ann Hewlett (2002)

I see that Michele beat me to mentioning that I had the opportunity to review Genevieve Kineke's book -- I would definitely recommend it, Elizabeth. Genevieve does an outstanding job of explaining the importance of "woman's work" in the world. Basically, she compares the work of women to the work of the Church -- for example, for every sacrament she draws a feminine parallel (baptism cleanses, initiates spiritual order, welcomes to the community -- just as women clean, lend order to a household and offer hospitality.) The importance of feminine work mirroring the work of the universal Church is spelled out and emphasized in a number of ways. Genevieve uses examples from Maria Montessori's and Edith Stein's lives (as well as many others) to illustrate that "feminine" does not equal "weaker" or "lesser", etc.
It's an excellent book.
I'd also recommend von Hildebrand's The Privilege of Being a Woman.
And, I second the good work that's done by Feminists for Life. They expose the real history behind early feminists and how they felt about abortion (abhorred it.)
I'll pray for your friend's daughter, that she can find her way back to the real feminism (that is, the recognition of all that is vital in femininity) of John Paul II, and the Catholic Faith.

Another book that reveals some of the Catholic feminism errors is Ungodly Rage by Donna Steichen, published by Ignatius Press.
I also second Alice Von Hildebrand's books and Regine Pernoud's Women in the Days of Cathedrals. The latter really opened my eyes to the influence of the Enlightenment and women.

I am currently reading Betty Steele's book The Feminist Takeover: Patriarchy to Matriarchy in Two Decades I had just read the section on how lonely and depressed woman get when they are divorced even if they have children in my car before walking into hockey practice. When I got inside I sat down with three other hockey moms, two of whom are single moms. I couldn't believe it when the conversation went to the two of them talking about even though they love their children it is just terribly lonely to be a single mom. I found the book at www.hli.org for a great price.
