Friends, I have never posted in the Book Club section of 4Real despite being a big reader, but I have been so touched by Kristin Lavransdatter that I had to find out if any of you felt the same!

I remember trying to read this book some time in high school, but it just didn't grab my attention. I think I revisited it because someone here on the boards recommended it: I'm a medieval history buff, a wife and mother, so I thought the book might work now. Wow!

I spent many hundreds of pages being irritated with Kristin because she seemed only to make a mess of her life, but as the story unfolded and she was seized by her love for her sons, I experienced something quite different. How sad! How beautiful! And how glorious!

And I have never read anything that gives the reader such an experience of Christendom: medieval Europe that was truly a world of the Church. Of course the people and the clergy were not perfect, sometimes, in fact, horribly sinful, but still the people were woven together by their belief in Christ and love of Mary. What a beautiful world in this respect.

Anyone else captivated by Kristin?

Me!!!!! I know what you mean. Sometimes I just wanted to shake her!! But yes, so beautiful how everything unfolded. I have pages and pages of quotes and excerpts from the book. So many I could meditate on and think about my role as wife, as mother, as child of God, as friend, etc. So yeah. I want my daughters to read it, when the time is right. :)
