Hi Ladies,
I received The Help by Kathryn Stocket for Christmas from my SIL.
Admittedly, I was super skeptical--I am always skeptical of "popular" books.
I decided to give it a try...and oh my!...this book is FABULOUS!! I finished it in 4-5 days...and lost sleep in the process.
I think it might be something a great many of you would enjoy.
Just my .02.

I listened to this last summer as an audiobook and absolutely loved it. There are several different narrators to play the different maids' parts and they are all very convincing.

Maggie, thank you for posting this. My MIL loaned me her copy. It's been sitting on my counter since New Year's because I've been skeptical -- I'm just not a new fiction kind of gal.
Now I'll give it a try.

This was a fantastic book. I love new fiction and read a lot of it, but this one really grabbed me.

My friend loaned me her copy. She is Welsh and thought I might like it because she knows I am from the south. It has been sitting there because I have also been hesitant to read it.

It definitely falls into the category of "living" books.
It is quite gripping...and at times, even hard to read...emotionally, speaking...but well worth it, imo.

Thanks again, Maggie. I read it yesterday and it was impossible to put it down.
I think that's the main reason why I don't read fiction -- I get too immersed and find it hard to tear myself away.

Super Gigantic Dittos here.....on an impulse, I picked it up at the library for a book discussion group.....I gobbled that book down in one big two day marathon reading session.....who me?? kIds?? meals?? appointments?? I could not put it down. Very thought provoking....just a few days after I read it, I listened to Dick Gordon’s “The Story” on NPR....and he interviewed two women who were from Jackson, Mississippi...it was a lot of fun listening to that interview after having just read the book. Here’s the link:
"The Story"
I had NO idea that kind of stuff went on, having lived in the North my whole life.....I was so clueless. The character development was really, really well done.
Anyone else?
You are right, Jenn...this is why I have such a hard time reading good fiction, I get so absorbed in the story I can’t put it down. I. Must. Know. How. It. Ends.

I'm glad you liked it. I did find the ending disappointing. It made New York, the North, as *The Promised Land*, almost back to the North/South division. It was almost like a slap ending...leave and everything will be fine. Nothing good here...even leave your family and your mother dying.

Bumping as I started reading it yesterday and am about half way (late night ). It is riveting. I saw a few weeks ago that it has been made into a movie coming out this summer. Interested to see how that turns out. The trailers look good.
