Ladies I thought I'd just pop in and say I finished two books I absolutly loved by Francine Rivers .
Tit is two book set Her Mother's Hope & Her Daughter's Dream.
I could not put the books down I loved them so much .
I've not read anything else by this author and I may be a bit more into it then some as the books reminded me so much of my grandmother's life and story etc. the books follow 4 generations of women from the one family .
There are letters throughout the books which is also a style I love to read .
thought some of you may also enjoy the read

Thanks for the recommendation. I have been wanting to try Francine Rivers, but didn't know where to start. I just placed holds on these at the library.

Francine Rivers is my favourite fiction author. I received those two books for Christmas - they were wonderful. And I just re-read The Scarlet Thread, which I love. Just in case anyone is wondering, she is a protestant author (some people may have issues with Mary, in the Lineage of Grace series).

In the same genre is Jan Karon who authors the Mitford Book Series, which I absolutely love. Such a peaceful, relaxing series to read...
My most favorite was her recent Home to Holly Sprigns, which was fantastic--got that from the library.
I just received Francine Rivers books from a friend...have yet to dive in...

I am currently re-reading the Mitford series by Jan Karon. My absolute favorite series!
She has also written another book after Home to Holly Springs called "In the Company of Others". Also excellent.

I just thought I would plug a catholic author who wrote very nice books similar to the Mitford series. Her name is Katharine Valentine. There are several in the series beginning with A Miracle for St. Cecilia's. I was very surprised to find them at my library several years ago.

I just read the first book, I agree, riveting I didn't realise it had a sequel until I finished, so annoyed, I want the second book now I was lent the first from a friend, so hoping she has the sequel.
Did your g'mother arrive in Canada from Switzerland too?

I want to preface this by saying I have not read any of Francine Rivers' books so this is not my personal opinion, but she was being discussed recently on another Catholic forum I was reading, and the following post was made
I thought I’d post as a head’s up. I looked through Francine Rivers’ Amazon page. Looks like she’s not Catholic at all, and in fact her book- Unafraid denies the Immaculate Conception, and is generally not kind to our Blessed Mother (or St Joseph for that matter). That’s not to say the book series you are reading isn’t good or entertaining, I just thought I’d share what I found out about the author’s other views. Our Lady is very dear to me, and I’m always saddened to hear about offenses to her Immaculate Heart.
so, just a caution about some of her books, possibly.
Karen

You are right Karen, about the book Unafraid. I read this one before I was a Catholic, and unfortunately, didn't really mind the way Mary was portrayed (I have since changed my views). She writes as most protestants believe - that Mary had brothers and sisters, and she also had other children. I haven't reread that one again since (and was surprised to find it in our parish's library). I haven't come across anything else anti-catholic in her writings at all (but then again, I am a new Catholic), and really enjoy all of her other books.

Do point it out to your priest, most likely he hasn't read it, and would remove it.

Hi Erin , no my grandmother's family was swiss german mennonite they were the mennonites who migrated to Pennsylvania then on up to Ontario , then my great great grand parents migrated to MB. all this time remaining farmers & rebels at the same time
I do not just read catholic authors or just Christian authors so have no idea what is offence to some may not be to another . These books are not out right anti catholic . however they do depcit the mindset of the times in the early 1900's etc. my dh french canadian catholic family were just as anti protestent as some protestents are anti catholic .
I just try and be a true loving Christian and read good books

What a fascinating family history! So how many generations ago did your family leave the Mennonites?
I have read the second book now btw. Very thought provoking regarding mother/daughter relationships.

Hey Erin ! Yes I think the books were great and showing how with each generation the strength that came too .
It was with my Grandmother & her siblings generation . The boys remained mennonite and one actually remained a farmer in SK too.
My great grandparents had a farm in SK and a home in MB in the city so that when the children became older could attend university . My great grandfather acted like a broker for migrating mennoites from Russia helping them purchase farms in the prairies. He then later helped purchase land in central & south america for the mennonites from here who wished to escape the encroachment of the secular world . some have returned home over the yrs and they are known as Mexi mennonites and they run tortillarias etc. it is really neat cultural combination !
I think the girls married outside the mennonite church so that is where the Anglican influence came . I realize they were very open and considered rebellious. I found letters where my greatgrandmother was attending seminars by a hindu priest in the mid 1920's . The family always had portrayed her as a very staunch rigid mennonite lady . Clearly she was not that prudish
My grandmother after graduating Normal school went north to teach in a mission residential school . which she left after 3 months because of treatment of the children .she then went north again but she then had her own one room school house . This is when she met my grandfather ( at a box lunch dance )
his family had been catholic Lebanese but became Anglican later on . They lived on the Indian reservation but when my grandfather was about 7yo they crossed the lake to live there . I beleive they fell into being Anglican just because that was the only church in the community . A catholic priest would still make rounds to visit families though . I inhertitade my great grandmothers rosay a few yrs back ! I felt very honoured as it was special to her and I've been told she prayed it up until she passed away .
Did I tell you my grandmother & grandfather crossed the lake in canoe to go get married at the church on the reserve ! it was stormy and they had to soend the night with the minister and his wife . I love reading thier adventures and am trying very hard to begin a blog/ journal of my grandmothers life from around 1911-mid 1940's . I have the blog up but of course with life you know how it is.
I have all her journals from childhood and letters I am truly so grateful as she really is helping me in my journey as wife , mum & granny .
