I know this is the book forum but since we have the movie lists I hope no one minds if I post this here - feel free to move it or delete if not!
Has anyone here watched the series Lost that was on TV for several years (6 seasons I think)? I never paid any attention to it when it was on, but over the last couple months I have seen several people online refer to its "Catholic" themes, which piqued my interest. Now that Netflix has instant download, I've become a Lost junkie, watching several episodes at a time and I'm now up to season 5. I'd just like to know if anyone else sees these Catholic themes in the show - there were a few Catholic scenes early on (flashbacks of one character going to confession, a song to Mary in one, etc) but overall it's just strange sci-fi IMO! But, I'm now hooked and must finish watching anyway.

I LOVE LOST!
The LOST writers used elements from MANY religions and mythologies in the series. The main Catholic theme I can think of is that of redemption. All of the characters truly were "lost" in every sense of the word before coming to the island. Slowly but surely the island "healed" them all.

Good to know I'm in good company
Yes, I guess I do see the redemption in some ways but don't spoil the last 2 seasons for me. I've just finished the one where there is all the flash-forward stuff so it's hard to figure out what is going to happen. And still so many unanswered questions!
And Sayid, who seemed to have repented of his former ways while on the island (after the unfortunate torture of Sawyer) - in the future flashes, he's an assassin!
And so many dead people show up for conversations

another Lost-ie chiming in ... wondering if anyone has read The Gospel According to Lost? it was written by a pastor and got a lot of good reviews; I was intrigued but never got around to reading it. DH is hoping the author will update it to include elements from the show's ending.

I really enjoyed LOST. Really. But, I was disappointed in the ending, which to me, sort of took away a lot of what I had enjoyed about it. I don't want to give any spoilers, so I'll leave it at that.
I also thought that the claims that it was "Catholic" were exaggerated. As Theresa said, it incorporated a lot of different forms of spirituality, Catholicism one of them. Some of the philosophies (almost all the characters names are references to a philosopher) used were interesting, but some were of course anti-Catholic. This only bothered me in the context of the claims that it was so very Catholic, yk? I never would have expected a network sci-fi show to be orthodox or anything.
If you read Doc Jensen's commentaries at ET (ETA: Lol, I meant EW. This link will take you straight to the lost page, but be careful because the most recent articles will obviously have spoilers) on the individual episodes, he does a good job of picking out the religious and philosophical themes, though, I sometimes felt that in his enthusiasm, he saw more than was there. One of my friends who is convinced it is a very Catholic show introduced me to his articles which I only started reading during the last season. So, that might help you "see" what others are claiming.
Overall, I thought it was bad science fiction. The characters were entertaining and engaging, of course, and I enjoyed seeing their stories. But, apparently that's all it was supposed to be?
Anyway, just my two cents.

Agreeing with Crunchy Mom! The first few seasons are fun entertainment, but when they tried to explain it all and wrap it up at the end, it fell apart.

I personally loved the way it ended.
The writers had said ahead of time that some would love the end and some would hate it, but very few would fall in between. Of the people I have talked to about it that seems to be holding true!

I think it might have had to do with what was driving your interest in the show. Dramatically, it was pretty satisfying. In terms of wrapping up the more intriguing aspects of the show, it didn't hold up for me. That's why I thought it was bad science fiction--good drama, though.

I loved it too, I think for very personal reasons - but I can't give them away without it being a spoiler. Loved the whole show and spent hours watching marathon sessions when sick. Ahhh, the memories.

Yes, thank you to all of you for not giving away spoilers! Part of me wants to know certain things yet but I know it will ruin it for me if I do.
For me, once a large part of the show began to be off-island it's lost something (no pun intended!) The flashbacks were great b/c you kept figuring out just a little more of the character at a time (and my opinion of that character changed more than once). But the future flashes annoy me.
Karen
ps. will be starting season 5 tonight!

I **LOVED** the ending!!!! I have had some pretty neat discussions on it elsewhere, but don't want to spoil it for those others on the thread who haven't seen it.
But I loved it. Totally satisfying for me, and I had been fully prepared to be absolutely disappointed (Battlestar Galactica, anyone?)
But I loved it.

Oh, I finished LOST last night! I was trying to stretch out that last season but couldn't stand the suspense any longer. I loved the ending. yes, it did not answer a lot of the detail questions but I still liked what happened. I agree that there were lots of different philosphies wrapped into it - i kept trying to make an allegory in the last season, with Jacob, MiB etc but you can't really pigeonhole the characters that way.
I did think it was interesting that Jack was the last one to figure things out.
Karen, already planning a re-watch very soon.

OK. After about 6 years of people telling me about it and never being at a hotel when it's on to even catch episodes here and there (we don't have tv at home) - I finally watched it on Netflix.
I have to say - if not for all the conversation about it - I'd have watched the pilot, given it one more episode and walked away. I was really very unimpressed - the constant movement of the camera was too much (I understand what they were getting at, but it was TOO much!); as someone else said it doesn't really "feel" sci-fi - more drama and that just wasn't doing it for me.
And the Twilight Zone references? With the word LOST floating around like that - it almost tries to make the show more suspenseful than it is - the opening/closing should support the show, not overwhelm it and in its simplicity, it actually overwhelms the show.
HOWEVER. The 3rd and 4th episodes got me. Especially the 4th (I won't leave spoilers) - the one with the memorial service is all I'll say to jog memories, specifically Rose's and Lock's experiences and words.
NOW I'm intrigued. I'll keep watching
Based on earlier comments in this thread, I have a feeling I won't care for the ending much - but maybe I will. We'll see :)

That's kinda what happened with me too. The pilot was OK, the next episode, eh, and I almost quit, but watched a few more and was hooked. it's definitely a roller coaster ride up and down emotionally over the 6 seasons.
From what I have read on other forums, many of the people who disliked the ending are anti-religious and disliked that part of it. Others feel that too many questions were left unanswered, but I really felt that the important questions were answered - the rest were details that don't affect the storyline much, and a complete tying up of every single question would have been boring.
