Okay, so my library had all of the Mrs. Tim books by DE Stevenson. It was easy to pick and go through.
But, it didn't have Miss Buncle's Book. I just got it through interlibrary loan, and it was great!
There are a slew of other books, but I get so boggled looking at series lists and trying to pick her books without randomly choosing the third in a series or something.
The same with Elizabeth Goudge. I've aimlessly searched in the online catalog to pick new reading only to find there isn't much and then be overwhelmed at the thought of not knowing what is in a series, what the subject is, etc... There is usually not a description for such old books.
I also thought I might try Noel Streatfield.
Problem is, all the authors were so darn prolific, I get paralyzed at the choosing.
How do you make your way through these extensive lists and know what to choose and or request through ILL?
Do I just throw darts?

Right. I found that site. But then, it doesn't tell you anything about what the stories are about, just a list. And then, I feel it would be more efficient to choose what they library already has, but then, it is pretty tedious since sometimes they have parts of series but not the whole thing (like, I just found that my library has the third Miss Buncle book but not the first two).
I'm sure I'm making this more complicated than it need be. I just get boggled and feel like it should not take *time* to choose what to read and find it in the library!

This http://destevenson.org/ has the books grouped by who the characters are and tells you if you should read them in particular order. You'll need to click on the books link at the bottom and then again on "the world of DES" to get the right list - the web address is the same for each page somehow so I can't link directly to it.
Also, I just finished The Marriage of Katherine Wentworth, the sequel to Katherine Wentworth and it was even better than the first. It could stand alone but you definitely get more background reading the first one first.

Some of DE Stevenson's books are not part of a series. Some titles are The Blue Sapphire, The Young Mrs. Savage, Charlotte Fairlie,Green Money, and Rochester's Wife.
We had a neighbor when I was little who was like the original Alibris. People from all over the world wrote her asking her to find books for them. She sold my mother a bunch of DE's in the 70's, and my mother just passed them all on to me. I have all but eight of her books now!

Ooh, I'm green with envy! the few my library has are so old they are about to fall apart. I think I'm the only to check some of them out in 40 years too! Our library is getting ready to move into temporary headquarters for 3 yrs while they tear down the old (100+ yo) building and build a new one and I'm worried they will toss the DES books b/c so few read them now. OTOH, I just might be first in line for the library sale
I just read Rochester's Wife last week and it was very good. I got Miss Buncle's book last weekend through ILL (I've already read Miss Buncle married) so will start it soon.

I love Rochester's Wife! I love the fact that Mardie was faithful to her husband, even when he disappeared! DE's characters are honorable, and that is one reason why I like the books so well! I see them from time to time at the Goodwill, if you like, I will keep an eye out for some for you!

I'm so jealous of those who started collecting her books before they cost a small fortune, lol! That's wonderful, Teamommy!
Thanks, ladies!
Erin, she really is delightful! Not too heavy, but very witty with well developed characters.

If anyone sees a copy of The Two Mrs. Abbotts that's not too $$$ I'd love to know about it. I can't get it through ILL and I'm seeing used copies for $50-80! I'm not really interested in collecting them, just reading them, so I'm definitely not paying that!
Karen
p.s. I agree about Mardie being faithful, what a nice story.

Oh, thanks Erin - but I see that's in NZ. I'm in the US - I tried to see what the postage would be but you have to finish the order form and wait for an email with the postal quote. I"m a bit worried how much that would run.

Thanks, Erin, but there doesn't seem to be any way to actually purchase it from them. It lets me add it to a wishlist or check to see if abebooks has it but I can't actually add it to a cart for some reason. Thanks for finding that, though, it looks like a great resource to keep in mind.
Karen
p.s. just finished Miss Buncle's book today (I'd already read Miss Buncle Married) and I loved it!
