For me...not my dc.
I'm not a history lover, and am a relatively new Catholic. I would like to understand this defining piece of our history...but would like an "easy" read-nothing too deep-but not Cliff notes,either!
Does anyone have a book in mind, that would fit my needs?
Thank you!!

Are you looking for a history book or a historical novel?

Characters of the Reformation by Hillaire Belloc
I've found this to be an interesting overview of the time period. Belloc gives much background information on the various characters who influenced the reformation period. I knew next to nothing of this period and this book was chock full of information - and written with a Catholic worldview

Hi Caroline,
I am looking for historical information, so,yes, a history book. I remember next to nothing of world history surrounding this era....
~~~~
Diana,
Thank you! I will check to see if our library carries this book. I did see on the Amazon reviews, the opinion that one must have some amount of knowledge about this time period, to truly understand and appreciate this author's work. I suppose that is objective opinion?
Thank you, Ladies!
Ditto on the Belloc book. Because the situation in England was entirely different from that on the Continent, I would also like to suggest Edmund Campion (I linked to a hardcover, but it also comes in paperback and definitely available through ILL). You might also take some time to read an encyclopedia article or two to get the "big picture".
I'm late chiming in, but I happened to help with a class on the Reformation at my parish a few years ago, so I've done a lot of reading on this topic.
Another helpful book by Hilaire Belloc is
How the Reformation Happened.
A great general Church history book with a nice section on the Reformation is Triumph. The author, whose name escapes me, has a fun sense of humor which makes for easy reading.
Also check out the fiction book Come Rack! Come Rope! for a neat perspective of the Reformation in England.
Happy reading!
