I don't know if this goes here, but I am so excited about this book that I had to post it somewhere! Amanda Soule has a new book out called The Creative Family. I just got my copy yesterday and I cannot put it down. I am so excited about EVERYTHING in this book! Obviously I highly reccomend it and if anyone else has it, I would love to hear what you think and as time goes by, how you used the book. I just have to say that I want to be Amanda Soule when I grow up!

I just got my copy yesterday -- and altho I like what she says there's anedge of something in there (maybe lack of mention of a Supreme Being who gave us these creative juices) ... but lots of great stuff in there that I'll be adding to my talk at the RMCHEC on incorporating handcrafts into the homeschool.

I've seen s-e-v-e-r-a-l mentions of this book.
What makes it different?
Is it just a list of things to do with your children? Are their essays to motivate me?
Is it a good book to excite us this summer when we have to spend more time at home because of gas prices?
What makes it so awesome?
And is it worth the money?

Here's my take on the book:
She does a GREAT job of giving you permission (and ideas) on how to be creative with your kids ... I like that she mentions that the "studio" is the dining room and so they're always surrounded by art/creativity.
I like her different crafts for kids -- altho I think you can get lots of them elsewhere.
I think it's a good (quick) read -- but if I hadn't already bought it, I'd get it from the library first. I bought it as I'm doing a talk on handcrafts and creativity and its got some great stuff in there to convince non-creative types how important it is to craft for and with your kids.
She's a little new agey for my tastes ... and many of her crafts are pretty standard. But it's a good jumping off place for those who don't already do crafts with their kids.

I have to agree with Mary G. (ha! I rhyme!)
The new ageyness was rather intrusive - IMO. It's clear that creativity and nature have become a religion, of sorts, for her.
If you're not "creative" with your kids - and we're talking more than just glitter and glue and craftsticks and construction paper (though not excluding that, either) I think its well worth the read. But otherwise, I think you can find the crafts elsewhere - all over blogland, in fact. And while her "studio" dining room is certainly cleverly disguised - I'm not sure I know of too many homeschoolers whose dining room doesn't serve as school/studio/dining area/puppet theater/tent/jungle gym/etc.
Ms. Soule certainly respects and loves her children - and this comes through in the book - if not the true theme. Respecting children and their endeavors. Encouraging those endeavors, celebrating them...

I have used several ideas from the book (birthday bunting, on-the-go-bags, embroidery, etc.) and for me, this book is still a must have. I refer to it over and over again. I have been a long time reader of Amanda's blog, so I am familiar with her ideas, but still, to have it in my hands makes it better for me. I did think that it was going to be more of a how-to, but after reading (twice) I find it way more inspiring than just a how-to. She doesn't so much tell you what crafts to do as much as why to be creative with your children.

Betsie -- that's one thing that I really like about the book -- she stresses the need for mom (and/or dad) to stop what they're doing and craft with their kids. And we homeschoolers have such great opportunities for doing this -- but I sometimes  forget and just let them have all the fun!

I also bought this book and enjoyed it. I also agree that it was a bit "New-Agey."
Anyone have any suggestions of similar books from a Catholic author or at least one that is not so new age? I am really trying to do more creative play with my son and have had to learn this myself to some extent.

I think the part I didn't like was the sense of God-lessness in the book ... there is just never a mention that God has created us in His image and likeness and thus being creative on our parts is natural progression from the Divine ... I would love to write a Catholic-perspective craft/creativity book and maybe I should as when I was researching for my talk this summer I could only find "new agey" or just super secular and "it's all me" type books.

Bless you, Cici, that's exactly what I needed to know. I was suspect that everything in the book were things hsing moms already know, do, encourage, celebrate, blog about.

So true. If this book can give other parents the motivation/insight they need then I say  .
I would still like to see it but my library doesn't have it so I'll wait.
Like Ryane, I'd like to see if anyone knows of a Catholic book out there such as this.

I edited this - probably said to much as the subject touched on a touchy place with me today.
The bulk of it was....I agree. That's exactly what bothers me about her site and book. Too secular, where praise to God is due, in abundance.

I agree with this. I think it struck me most in the section on blessings at family meal time. The sample blessings that she included were more along the lines of thanking "the Earth" rather than thanking God (for the beaufitful things in nature, etc.)
