Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

After watching the Sound of Music with the children I have just re-read Maria's story The Trapp Family Singers. Such a beautiful way of life, the customs etc. And they overcame so many difficulties when they reached America.

I was most interested to read on the internet that in Maria's early life she was raised in an atheist home.

I'm off now to research Vermont

Sound of Music is such a disappointment in that it completely takes the Catholic faith out her life. The family sang to preserve Catholic sacred music and folk music.

I tracked down the original movie done in German with English subbing Trapp Family Singers (I'm just including this link as an example, I didn't buy from here). The story is keeping with the sacred music idea, and works in Father Wasner, too. I liked it...and the music was more of what they really sing.

But Story of the Trapp Family Singers is one of my favorite books!!! Have you read her sequels? Family on Wheels, Yesterday, Today and Forever and Maria and When King was Carpenter. All good about her life in America. I've read that some of the writing was done by a ghost writer, but that still doesn't downplay that her Catholic faith played utmost role in everything.

I've had fun collecting other books and music about the Trapps. Of course a must read for Catholic families is her Around the Year With the Trapp Family. I also have The Trapp Family Book of Christmas Songs which is a great collection of Christmas carols, some family songs mentioned in her books. It has two hand arrangement, so great to play sing alongs on the piano. It's out of print, but they are around. I found a few on eBay right now. I also found a collection of songs used in the Trapp Family Music Camps they had in Vermont -- great collections of vocal sacred music, variety of vocal parts.

If you can find some recordings of the original Trapp Family, they are wonderful!!! Some of the records have the family members playing the recorders which is so delightful to hear, too. We have a record player so I can play those old Lps.

I'd love to see your links on Maria...and what you find on Vermont.

I have a few in-print books in my cart on Amazon that I would love to buy, but haven't gotten feedback:

The World of the Trapp Family by William Anderson

Agathe von Trapp : Memories Before and After The Sound of Music by Agathe von Trapp

Cay read one book geared for children that I can't remember the title...but she thought it was great.

Jenn,
I didn't realise there were so many sequels!
i would love to read the book written by Agathe, to hear it from the children's perspective.
I have a hazy memory of readin something written by Maria in which she indicated she had become quite charismatic in her Faith.

I do own Around the Year and refer to it often for customs one of my favourites.

As for your book written by Andersen I would have to assume its authentic. He stayed at the Family Lodge many times before writting it. I found a picture of him with some of the 'children' at the book launching.

The family today still owns the Lodge in Stowe Vermont and it is run as a resort. Johannes von Trapp is President. That site was where I found about Maria being raised as an atheist and socialist. sorry but I can't give you link, I tried four times and I kept losing this page and re-type I'm hopeless. Just type in von trapp family into your search engine.

Whilst typing that in I came up with lots of other interesting info. Werner von Trapp's grandchildren are still carrying on the family tradition and are singing!

I did find some bad press on Maria. I guess that's typical.

You know what I would love to know. Do many of the children still practise their Faith. I'm not being nosy. I'm wondering from a mother's viewpoint if a family has all these wonderful traditions, rosary etc did it 'catch' with them and the next generation. I realise statistically not all would but I wonder do all these wonderful Feast celebrations etc help to pass on our rich heritage. I do hope so.

Well I'm off to research your info

Some are sequels, others are "teaching" religious tools, like "Yesterday, Today and Forever" and "When King was Carpenter"...anecdotal stories to teach a religious point.

That would be Maria: In Her Own Words.

I think in another thread someone mentioned that sadly, they just sing secular and have ditched the Catholic tradition.

The Lodge used to have the Blessed Sacrament present in their chapel. Sadly it's become a fancy resort, nothing of the Sacred Heart Lodge it used to be.

I think some of it's true...it seems she was very strong-willed, so that can rub people the wrong way. Some of the children later resented the fact that she wouldn't allow them to get married so as to keep the family choir together...so one daughter just eloped.

I did find a cookbook that the Lodge sells...all secular. I wonder the same thing. Not all the children have come out with their story. Rosemary I believed died young...but she's the one that illustrated "Around the Year". I wonder about her.

I have the book of Christmas Carols from the von Trapp Family, but I bought it fairly recently from the gift shop at Stowe, at the resort. I just called and asked if they had it, they did, they mailed it. It's a great compendium of Christmas carols from around the world, plus Advent songs! We've learned quite a few of them for Advent. Highly recommended!

As for their progeny and Catholicism, I believe the third generation singing group, "The Von Trapp Children" (currently available on cd, and nice cds, at that) are all evangelical Christians. They have a web site but I haven't checked it...it makes me too sad seeing they've left behind their family's original faith. It totally bummed my head when I discovered how secularized the ski resort had become, too.

PS I loved reading those sequels, too, Jenn.
