Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm organizing a monthly ladies book group for the wives and faculty of WCC. I'd really like some suggestions from others who read more widely than I do.

However, we've got some special conditions. Not all are moms. Several of them are not Catholic: some are on their way in? one is lapsed. You get the picture...
Not TOO Catholic. Not too long. Not too heavy.

I also don't want anything which is in ANY way problematic (depressing, adultery, etc.).

We're starting with Till We Have Faces. (Yes, Heavy!) But I we need some more ideas--lit, history, bio, whatever.

Thanks a lot!

My book club has mostly read Catholic works, but here are a few that you might be able to use:

Murder in the Cathedral by T.S. Elliot. He wasn't Catholic and it is a poem, so it might be do-able.

Return to Modesty by Wendy Shalit. She is Jewish not Catholic and argues for modesty from mostly secular premises.

Parker's Back by Flannery O'Connor. She writes so well, but all of her stories are depressing in one way or other.

Other books that might be good to read are:

A Heart for Europe by James and Joanna Bogle about the last Emperor of Austria. (You don't have to tell the non-Catholics that he is now a Blessed.)

I, Juan de Pareja by Elizabeth Borton Trevino. It is a children's chapter book, but they may find it interesting given the emphasis WCC places on art history.

The Napoleon of Notting Hill by Chesterton.

Wives of the Dead or other short stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Hope some of these help. I am having a hard time thinking of non-fiction. Most of the NF that I read is Catholic or too long.

Christina,
These are some great ideas! TS Eliot is a very good choice for us.

I haven't read these Hawthorne stories, I'll have to see if the library has them.

I love E. Borton de Trevino. I'll look at Juan de Pareja again. Maybe My Heart lies south too?

Thanks again.
