Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've had this book on my shelf for a couple of years. Is this a worthy read?

Thanks!

I haven't read the book, but the movie (BBC version) is WONDERFUL! And BBC versions always seem to be so true to the books.
The characters are so warm and real and all of them grow and mature through the book, even the "bad" ones. Gaskell must have been a very perceptive and compassionate woman.

Hope that helps?

I have loved the BBC version of this book for years and have to see it at least once (twice, three times who's counting) a year.

I was surprised though when I read this on the Masterpiece Theater Learning Resources website:

Gaskell died before she finished Wives and Daughters... (edited to remove spoiler)...How did screenwriter Andrew Davies choose to script the final scenes? What do you think of his ending? Is the film's imagined ending consistent with the rest of the novel and the period in which it was written? How do you think Elizabeth Gaskell would react if she had a chance to see the end of the film?

Now I want to read the book to see how they dealt with the unfinished ending. Tell me if you get through it first!

I loved the book! I would definitely read it. And the movie was very good as well. But for me, the book is always better.

I haven't read the book, but the movie just arrived from Netflix yesterday! I was hoping to get to see it with my 18yo dd, but she is leaving tomorrow for school.

I have seen North and South, and it was FABULOUS!
