I read The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: How My Mother Raised 10 Kids on 25 Words or Less by Terry Ryan in March.......
It got me to thinking that there must be more books out there about families of 5 or more kids..............I know there is one with the word "pond" in the title...can't remember....
Can you list any books that you know of? Pull from non-fictional and fictional.......and include a review, if you can, please.
It is always fun to read about large families....like the ones on this list
Thanks! Happy reading!

I can't think of any outside of the obvious...Cheaper by the Dozen, Who Gets the Drumstick, etc...
I just wanted to toss in that I lived in Sherwood till I was 9, and then moved just about 20 min. outside of Defiance. Defiance is my old stomping grounds and I still have lots of family there. I drove by the Ryan house after I read the book! (both of them actually!)
I really enjoyed that book. Dh and I rented the movie not to long ago and it's pretty good too!

Chari, are you thinking of Ten Circles Upon the Pond by Virginia Tranel?
I did read it a few years ago...it was ok. I'm racing here, and no time for a real review...but I'll try later.

How about "The Family Nobody Wanted" the couple in the story adopted ten children of differing racial backgrounds. Very interesting. Sorry I can't remember the title at present. I was going to recommend the ones Lisa did, I'm interested to hear of any other titles.

I always loved "Cheaper By the Dozen". The sequel, "Bells on their Toes" was also good.

Picture book suggestion:
7 Silly Eaters!
Very funny!
My kids loved this one and wanted to read it over and over. In the end, the kids do the cooking!

About Who Gets the Drumstick. It's been years since I have read this one (I think I 'only' had 4 or 5 kids! ) but I remember how much I enjoyed it. Her faith was woven into the book and was so natural, and family helped family. Loved it. Then, I made the mistake and rented the movie. (Yours, Mine, and Ours) I was so disappointed. Very early on in the movie there was reference to how birth control should have been considered. I turned it off right then. (Should I have given it a chance?)

Do you mean the older "Yours, Mine and Ours" with Lucille Ball? We liked it, but there is also a scene when the children set her drunk to embarass her.
Altogether the message is what we enjoyed which seemed to be; family unity, and the difficulties of family life, parents are not always the "servants" of children;they are a couple first, there is a part where one older girl chooses chastity inspite of pressure from her boyfriend. The mother choses selflessly, the children begin to help and care for each other...
Lucille Ball said she was interested in the story because in the sixties she had become disgusted with the anti-family atmosphere in Hollywood.
No the movie is not perfect, overall it contained some lovely messages.

Erin -
"The Family Nobody Wanted" is one of my all time favorite books. I first read it in 7th grade when we were assigned to read and report on a book about someone using their previously undiscovered talents to improve their lives. I was overwhelmed by the love the Doss family was able to share with an assortment of handicapped and otherwise *unplaceable* children. The more they were willing to offer their love, the greater the love grew, allowing them to offer more and more of the same. It is a beautiful, moving, and often humorous story.
Peace,
Nancy

I read 10 Circles. Its not just the story of how mom raised 10 children...its also the story of the mom's loss of faith, in some ways. I didn't regret reading it, but it did leave me feeling kind of sad...

I was just looking at a book online.. so I haven't read it yet..
Quote:
Outnumbered: Raising 13 Kids with Humor and Prayer
To outsiders, the Kuharski family life sometimes looked like controlled chaos. With 13 kids-seven by birth, six by "airport" (adopted)-it sometimes felt that way to family members, too.
There were the vacations when the entire family jammed into one motel room. There were the excuses: "Kari told me she wanted her hair cut that short." "Dominic told me the cement was dry." "Tony said that Grandma said there wasn't any poison ivy in that area." There were the challenges of adopting special needs children and the heartbreak of watching some of those children fail to adapt.
Through it all, by the grace of God, much prayer, and lots of common sense, the family became an oasis of stability and love. Whether your family is big or small, whether you have young children, old children, grandchildren or no children, Outnumbered! will bring you to a place at a very special family table.
