Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am loving this book for a summer read. It is by Thomas Hardy and is a lot like Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility with a little of Midsummers Nights Dream all mixed into one.

Just thought I'd mention this book and has anybody else read it?

Thanks, Marianne! Your description has bought me in! I have been tempted!

Funny, my oldest just ordered a T Hardy from the library a few days ago!

Funny, cuz I've been thinking of reading this book for a while now.
Though, I kept chickening out because Mayor of Castorbridge and Tess of the D'Ubervilles are pretty sad (though good!) and I kept thinking I needed to be more in the mood for a sad book. (Pregnancy makes me too sensitive. )
So, is it really sad, Marianne?

The first half of the book is not sad and the second half of the book is a little tragic and sad but it ends well. I think the book gives a good lesson on how fickleness and selfishness along with lack of consideration of others can bring tragedy. It also shows what true love is (Gabriel Oaks) not beautiful words like Frank Troy but SACRAFICE. I loved the book and I want to see the BBC movie!

I've been wanting to read this book. Now you've piqued my interest. <sigh> Another title to put on my "books to read" list.

Just a little side note about the sadness of this book. I am usually given easily to tears, and I didn't shed a tear with this book. I was on vacation and couldn't put it down! It actually got lost a few times and my husband helped with the search.(He's my Gabriel Oaks!)

I haven't read this one yet. I love Thomas Hardy, though. Looks like one I'll have to put on my "to read" list.
