Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was thinking about all the curriculum questions I've been asking on these boards. I'm really having a hard time making decisions for next year. I know it's because I struggle with providing a my children with a "real" education, and just giving them a workbook so I can say, "yes, they did math today"! My heart is truly in the real education camp though!!! My trouble is a new baby coming makes me worry about how much time I will have. It seems I don't have enough time now for all the great things I want to do. So, I need to bring this all to the Lord, and I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on a Saint to pray to for his/her intercession? St. Elizabeth Ann Seton? St. John Bosco? Any others?

My first thought was
St. Thomas Aquinas

Also listed under Patron Saints for academics and scholars are:

Brigid of Ireland
Catherine of Alexandria
Nicholas of Myra

Becky,
I always feel a closeness for our homeschool decisions with Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton for some reason, and ask her to pray for me as a teacher daily, and ask her to pray for our homeschool.

The Lord used Blessed Mother Teresa however as a sign for us to homeschool, and uses her as a guide for me, and so she's our patroness of our homeschool. Our homeschool name is The Holy Family Homeschool. And I also ask St. Anne to pray for me and our homeschool as well.

There are so many wonderful saints, and the ones mentioned are all wonderful, and I'm sure there will be others as well. I think God brings to us saints that just jump into our hearts in a unique way for reasons that we sometimes don't even understand at the time.

I also wanted to just mention to remember, (because I'm a person who struggles with this), that it doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing. You can mix workbook and text type of learning with real learning to make it something that's more possible for you. I have done that very successfully, especially in those years where it's just not possible to do *real learning* for every subject. We're always bringing in real learning in various ways to all of our subjects, but oftentimes, english and math are very workbook/set program oriented, and sometimes even science for those years that are just not easy ones. History is the one subject where real learning comes in on a more consistant basis.

But even in our set programs/workbooks, I'm always using it as a spine, and pulling in various *real learning* into that subject, making the course something that is more tailored to suit the needs/philosophy of both student and teacher.

I'm such an all or nothing person. If I can't do it all perfectly, then I may as well just give up. And the guilt comes quickly when failure happens (the failure in my head that is). This ISN'T a good thing for me!    I battle it with prayer every single day, and God is working on me, and changing me, I'm happy to say. I'm beginning to realize that I don't have to throw out the baby with the bathwater, and I can create a balance that works for our family. It's a wonderful, freeing feeling to realize that.

I'll lift you in prayer as well as you make your decisions. I know how difficult and frustrating it can be, as I'm sure we all do!
