I got together with some friends from church today and I broached the idea of a Catholic VBS (our parish has traditionally joined with area churches to participate in an ecumenical one). They loved the idea and want to give it a try this year. We are looking at CHC's It's a Mystery: The Secret Garden. Have any of you all used it and could you give me a quick review or something?
Our thoughts are to keep it really simple and easy this first time around. But dh just told me that he thinks we should go for something big and bold and start out with a bang (that way it can not be brushed under the carpet...when a Catholic one was mentioned before, it was discouraged by the DRE so we are anticipating running into opposition to it). Dh feels that if we make it spectacular, then it is kind of like a done deal iykwim? My friends and I think simple will help it be successful.
If you have used CHC's, could you tell me your thoughts on it? Also what do you think-simple or spectacular? If we go with spectacular, I think I like the Catchat one and there was also the K4J and the Growing with the Saints one. They seem more "high tech" and colorful.
Thanks for helping me try to plan ahead!

I haven't used it in a parish setting but I think all 4 of these retreats from CHC are just wonderful. She spells out everything you need to do and coming froma Bible belt area where Catholic VBS is a re-do of the Protestant version, these retreats seemed like a wonderful oasis!
Its a Mystery: The Holy Trinity -- focusing on how to know, love and serve God
It's a Mystery -- Perfect Personality -- focusing on the personal attributes of the Holy Trinity
It's a Mystery: The Secret Garden focuses on Mariology
It's a Mystery: The Household of God focusing on the role of the Church and our role within that hierarchy.
I've looked at all 4 of these and am so impressed. And they're completely self-contained -- all the work of invites, poster suggestions, timing, logistics and supplies is all done for you and each retreat can stand on it's own. It takes a lot to impress me and these retreats do.
Let me know if you need any other details.....

The best VBS we have experienced is the K4J one. It is part of Catholic KidsNet, a Catholic club for kids. My kids love it, learn so much and the music is fun and orthodox. There is nothing more beautiful than having your 4 yr old come home singing "I Want to receive Jesus" and being able to tell you all about the Mass.
The focus in past years has been on the Eucharist, Mary and the saints. We have participated in some of the "Catholicized" Protestant programs. They lack substance and do not have a real Catholic emphasis.
Here is the link Catholic KidsNet

Revisiting this old thread...
My husband has volunteered to head up VBS this year at our parish and we are looking into the various Catholic VBS programs that are now available.
Would any of you please comment about your experiences with the various Catholic VBS programs? It's hard to compare apples to apples on cost and supplies right now. Are they all completely planned out?
Thanks!

Just to add another Catholic VBS that wasn't listed here...
We really enjoyed our CatChat VBS last year. It seemed very planned out and well organized.

I love all the CHC retreats - they are quite well-planned and organized - and suited for any size crowd.

We used one last year from Cat. Chat (#1 Cool Kingdom Party) and the pre-k-5th graders LOVED it. It would be rather young for the 6th graders and up.. but my older kids ended up being helpers and went from station to station with the smaller kids to lend a hand in keeping the groups together and helping at each station.

I plan on helping with out bible school this year. I'm looking forward to it! I don't know what the curriculum will be yet, though.

bumping this up. I'm directing our bible camp this summer for the first time. We're going with Inside Out and Upside Down on Main Street. It isn't Catholic but it did have a fairly nice Catholic supplement that teaches the upcoming changes to the Mass. The Catholic ones were just too much more expensive or didn't fit the mix of volunteers we already had and I didn't have time to tweak. Hopefully next year we can find a way to use a Catholic curriculum instead.
