Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a question about Holy Orders. Would a seminarian making his Transitional Diaconate Ordination be making his Holy Orders, or are they later when he becomes a fully fledged priest? I am very fuzzy on the process, on how it all works.

I ask because we have a seminarian at our parish who is making his T.D.O. this weekend and the boys are making him cards, but I want to be sure we use the appopriate terms.

Also, is it appropriate to send him a card? We've gotten to know him through VBS and seeing him at Mass, of course. He's such a nice young man. A whole busload of parishioners are going into Boston to support him, but we can't make it. I thought the cards would be a nice gesture, but I don't want to make light of it, either.

Thanks for any info. or insight!

Hi Dawn!

Sorry this is so rushed, just a few thoughts to answer your questions...
Yes, a seminarian being ordained to the temporary diaconate is taking his first step on the hierarchical rung of Holy Orders. This is his first public declaration that he is giving himself totally to God and the Church. Though he will not make his permanent vows until his ordination to the priesthood, he does publicly promise obedience to the Bishop, and make vows of celibacy (Uh, I think that is all, anyone else know?)He is now no longer to be considered a lay person. He is a cleric who assists the priesthood, can preach at Mass, can Baptize, witness marriages etc. but he cannot offer Mass or hear confessions. After he is ordained to the diaconate, he will wear his roman collar (hopefully ), but he is not to be referred to as "Father" yet (that comes after his ordination to the priesthood)When you address his card (which would be a lovely idea) address him as either, "Rev. Mr John Smith " or "Deacon John Smith".
Hope that makes sense...
Make plans now to go to his ordination to the priesthood. Trust me, you won't want to miss it. It is such an awesome, awesome experience. I think your boys would be delighted!

Dawn,

Yes. There are three degrees of Holy orders.

" ...Catholic doctrine teaches that the degrees of priestly participation (episcopate and presbyterate) and the degree of service (diaconate) are all three conferred by a sacramental act called "ordination," that is, by the sacrament of Holy Orders" CCC 1554

You might want to read the whole section as it explains it far better than I can.

Oh and yes it would certainly be appropriate to send a card.

Oh, I just finished a response but now you have two anwsers already before I posted - so I second what they said. I would just add the common language of the orders the deaconate (deacon), the presbyterate (priesthood), and the episcopate (bishop). So when a seminarian is ordained a transitional deacon, yes, he is receiving the sacrament of Holy Orders but only of that first sacramental order.

And I think it is a lovely idea to make cards for him and very appropriate. This is an important step in the series of Holy Orders he will receive. What a blessing to your boys to have him as a role model in their lives at this time. We know several of the seminarians here in our diocese and I thank GOd all the time for the blessing of them in our lives. They are such good influences on my children and such wonderful young men.
