I have written in the past about some of the unique (retiree heavy) qualities of our sweet parish. One is that in the past, altar boys only served at the "family mass" while adult men served at all the other masses. After attending daily mass for some time, another hs family's two sons began serving at daily mass as did my son. Recently, the three boys were asked to serve at some of the other Saturday/Sunday masses to included funerals. Then, a few weeks ago, the three boys received formal cassocks and surplices to wear at all the masses outside of the family mass (where the servers wear albs.) Now...
Our parish will be visited by the Bishop tomorrow morning and the three boys were asked to serve with him at the 8:00 mass. This is a first! We are SO excited!
I'm sharing this for two reasons. The first...will you pray that all goes smoothly? The second...for those of you who have altar server concerns at your parish, change may be right around the corner. By hanging around, being available, showing reverence, and building relationships over time, change has happened in a gradual and gentle way. We are so grateful.
Thank you for your prayers,

Angie, this is just wonderful--what an honor for your dear son and his friends. They are a shining example of what comes from home education!
I hope you will be able to sneak a picture with the Bishop to share with us.

How exciting!! My son has served for our bishop a few times, once at the cathedrel even! I was a nervous wreck, but he did beautifully!
I'm not sure what server issues you have at your parish, I will pray though. Our parish is known in our diocese for our servers, I am blessed to have my boys part of the server society.

This is so very wonderful! My ds served at his father's graduation mass in the cathedral with the Bishop in a neighboring diocese. All of the altar boys were older (some even college age). He ws only 12 at the time. He looked wonderful in a red cassock. The Bishop made him feel extra special. And he did a wonderful job.
Our servers wear albs here. And we have female servers as well. I'm not sure what the general feeling on this is, but last Sunday we had two high school aged boys serving with a 5th grade girl. It just seemed so out of place.

The server situation in my parish drives my nuts. The server for Marianna's First Holy Communion during the "Children's Mass" was a very elderly lady.
The change in your parish is wonderful!
What fabulous memories your son will have!

Angie
How exciting for your son and the other boys the first time my son ever served was for our Bishop at a Confirmation Mass and this year my second son also served at his sister's Confirmation Mass, the poor lad though was so tired he had to hold the Bishop's mitre and had to stand for the WHOLE Mass and it was so hot, I was so proud of him, he is only nine.
Proud mommy moments for you and your son will never forget serving for the Bishop. Great promotion for homeschoolers too We now get to hear a yearly sermon from our Bishop on how he expects so much from homeschoolers and how pleased he is with our children. Pray God you may hear this one day.
Jennifer,
How horrifying, can you dock your boat up river a little?

Hey, Karen. Interestingly, I think you might be thinking of Bishop Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix who I have written about in the past because my home is about 2 miles east of the diocese line so we are often involved there. Technically, our family resides in the Diocese of Tucson with Bishop Kicanas. It is always a privilege to have him travel to our far north parish.
Bishop Kicanas with his left hand on Aiden
Our parish priest, Fr. Pinti, is in the upper right corner. Aiden is in the middle of his friends. Happy day!
Merry Christmas!
