Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We went to Mass there yesterday. The Baltimore Basilica has just been renovated. This beautiful cathedral was the first to be built in the USA. It's been restored to its original, soothing pale yellow/wedgewood blue/light salmon pink color scheme. I felt warm and peaceful in the Basilica.

Mass was lovely...incense, a great choir, beautiful natural light...wow.

The Basilica offers free tours after the 10:45 Mass. Dh had to race to the airport, so we'll have to go back for the tour (twist my arm!). They have a Latin Mass at 9:00 on Sundays. They have tours on weekdays as well.

The cathedral was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who also designed the U. S. Capitol. The crypt has never before been open to visitors; there's also a small museum. This would be a great field trip for people in the DC/VA/PA area.

The Basilica sits right next to Our Daily Bread, the Catholic Charities organization that serves meals to the poor each day. At 10:15 the line was already huge...a stark reminder that our brothers and sisters always need help and comfort.

Baltimore's one of the true Catholic heritage sites in the USA. We really enjoyed our time in the Basilica, so I thought I'd share our experience with you.

Lucky you, Nancy. I would so love to see that Cathedral! I was looking at the Catherdal site last year when we studied Baltimore/Ft. McHenry and saw that it was undergoing renovation. So glad to hear it is completed and that it is beautiful.

Side note...we reviewed the Basilica's history today and my son (14, usually bored with church things) admitted that he really liked going to Mass at the Basilica!      I guess he has a soft spot for "Ave Maria" and lots of incense...a very good thing.

Too neat that they rediscovered the 4 paintings of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John during the restoration. I'd love to see it one day.
