I posted a link to the St. Nicholas unit I put together on the St. Nicholas thread yesterday and have already received a lot of emails about it. But I began to think the link may get lost in an already long thread. So I thought I'd post it here to make it more accessible.

St. Nicholas Unit

FYI, considering the coinciding of Pope Benedict's trip to Turkey next week (Nov. 28-Dec. 1) and the feast of St. Nicholas, it's a good time to study Turkey (I included a bit in the St. Nicholas unit). EWTN has promised live coverage of the trip, so it should really bring it to life.

I've noticed that many people seem to print out colored illustrations for their projects. Doesn't this get costly? What type of printer/ink are you using? I'm wondering if the newer printers are more cost efficient for printing in color.

I guess it's not exactly cheap, but I still think that putting together our own projects, even when we print out a couple full-color sheets, is much cheaper than buying pre-planned unit studies. I just consider it part of the cost of homeschooling, but I'm careful to be choosy about what materials we print.

As far as printers go, our printer recently crashed and we replaced it withan HP Vivera. To buy a package of all the colors of ink + black it is about $35. But the ink (according to me and Consumer Reports) lasts about twice as long as my HP from 3 years ago. That was actually one of the big selling points.

So, I would answer that yes, ink for newer printers is cheaper but that it still remains costly as educational expenses go. Keep in mind that you always have the option of printing out anything in grayscale and draft. (I do this quite a bit.)

Thanks so much for this! I was going to put off talking about the real St. Nicholas for another year, but yesterday my kids ambushed me wanting to know all about Santa Claus. I told them he was a real person, a saint, from Turkey. It helped, but that is all I know! This unit is so perfectly timed! Thank you so so so much!
