Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, I don't know how to put this. Does anyone know of a place I can get saints cards that are- well- cheerful? The ones that we got at our All Saints Day picnic were not the grimmest I've ever seen, but they were definitely on the spooky side. Only St. Jude managed to look normal and approachable. Same thing at our local Catholic bookstore.

I know the saints were real people. They laughed, they smiled, they were joyful for the Lord. St. Joseph of Cupertino could even fly! That would make anyone smile. So why are the pictures on the cards so... scary? I know that the idea is to depict the saint with his/her symbols, but does St. Patrick have to glower and look like he might strike someone with his staff?

It's the same with Catholic calendars. I don't even out ours up anymore showing the pictures because I feel like they are scary for children (and I don't enjoy looking at them, either).

I want to put together a saints notebook for the kids using baseball card holders so they can look at the cards or get them out and handle them. But I've got to find pictures that won't frighten them. Any ideas?

Do you think the Holy Traders look bad? I was just looking at them this afternoon at a bookstore and I didn't notice anything really negative. But then, i was in a hurry with three kids in a store with tons of breakable figurines around.

I guess the cards I've seen look either scary or, more often "surreal". St. Gerard- the card we have shows him by a window, holding a very large wooden cross with flowers on it. He's staring at the cross with a very pious but odd expression on his face.   The setting is very holy, which is good, but not very approachable... I feel like the card does not help make him very real for my kids. He doesn't look like the kind of guy you'd want to get to know better.

I don't know... maybe I'm being silly or irreverent wanting the saints to look less pious and more human/everyday... maybe even smiling. They have such amazing stories... but I guess I don't want them to look like cartoon characters, either.

I'll have to go back and check to see if the ones we have are Holy Traders or not...

Now why didn't I think of that? Great idea!

I'm thinking that the saint cards you have are the more traditional ones. The    Holy Trader Cards have a newer feel but the contents are sound. See Mother Theresa smile . We have all sorts of saint cards. I have found that as the children grow older, especially the boys, they are more drawn to the seriousness instead of finding them scary.

Love,

The Holy Traders are definitely more of what I am looking for. Thanks for posting the link!
