Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dh took me out to dinner tonight and while talking said he'd like to really start studying the Catholic faith because he thinks that if he could become Catholic it would bring us closer. He doesn't know if he would ever really convert but he might as well be more systematic in studying it. He asked me where he should start. He's read bits and pieces of the Catechism and that appealed to him. He's also read bits and pieces of For Better or For Worse and he liked what he read.

I just got the Jeff Cavin's Bible Adventure series for my 7th and 9th graders. I thought it might be good if he studied along with us.

The only apologetics books I know are by Scott Hahn which already assume Christianity. My dh is a secular Jew so the real big hurdle is believing Jesus is really the Messiah and Son of God. Very major hurdle there!

Any recommendations? Kathryn, where are you? Can you help?

Thanks,

Faith

Faith,
What exciting news. His interest in knowing more about your faith is touching. My suggestion would be to look into materials by Rosiland Moss. Rosiland Moss is a convert from Judism and an apologist with Catholic Answers. She has great apologetics information on the topic. She is a guest speaker on Catholic Answers Live almost every month - you can search the archives for past shows and listen to them online. She is the editor of Home at Last which includes her conversion story. Tapes of her talks are available for sale through Catholic Answers. Go to their book and gift catalogue online and search "Jewish" to get a listing of her tapes (along with other resources).

The book Salvation is from the Jews Roy Schoeman by is supposed to be very good. Everyone I know who has read it says it is very through and a great resources on Judiasm and the fulfillment of God's plan of salvation through the Catholic faith. It's on my "to read" list.

A good basic text for Christian apologetics when talking to those who might not believe in God or in the divinity or Jesus would be Handbook of Christian Apologetics.

Faith,

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!

I stumbled across your post and really don't have any great insights for you, but I want you to know that I will be praying for you and your husband. I think it's just wonderful that he wants to be closer to you through study of the Catholic faith. I can tell that you're a wonderful example to him and to the rest of your family.\

The heart of our faith is, of course, the Bible, Tradition, and the sacraments of initiation, so I'd suggest that you look for books on these topics first. It seems as though your husband likes to read about things that interest him, so I will pray that he's directed to books that really explain our faith in a positive, comprehensible fashion. I'm sure someone here will have good suggestions for you.

You know, I have this gut feeling that the major hurdle has already been passed...your husband wants to learn more, because of his love for you. Even if he doesn't study a lot right now, or doesn't convert until he's 90, he has acknowledged that there's something special to be learned; he can see that because he sees its effects in your life. I'm so happy for you; I just know he's a really wonderful person because he has so much respect for your faith.

So...all I can do to help is pray...expect lots of prayers from me!!!!!!!!!

BTW, my dh converted before we were married...I didn't expect him to (my mom tried to talk him out of it,!!!!)...so I understand a little of what it's like to be in a loving relationship with someone of another faith. Everything happens in God's time, as I am sure you know. Hopefully, prayers from the wonderful people here will help God's time to arrive soon!

Lots of prayers and cyber-hugs from

Hi Mary and Nancy,

Thanks for your responses. I had thought about Rosiland Moss. I'll look into her. I know things happen in God's own time. Thanks so much for your encouragement and prayers.

Blessings,

Faith
