Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My family and I have just come back from a lovely holiday down in Sydney. One of the reasons we were down there was because my Gregorian Chant choir, Schola Cantorum were invited to sing at a Music Festival in honor of the Triumph of the Holy Cross down in Helensburg.

On the actual feastday we were invited to sing at an old stone church in Kangaroo Valley (2-3 hours south of Sydney) for this feast but also for the installation and blessing of a new stain glass window of St Edith Stein.

The personal significance was not lost on me, considering all the major changes I have made to my schooling in the last few months! I felt very honored to chant for this occasion.

The lady who had designed and made it was there and she explained all the symbols in the window. There is barb wire running through the daisys, representing her triumph over suffering, the big orange tulip somehow represented Holland, from where she had been deported.

The Star of David, her Jewish heritage and the turquoise jewel in the middle, her journey through life. The three stars, the Blessed Trinity, and her scholerly life represented in the book and quill. Even the way she looks meant something but I can't remember that now. Here is the window:

Oh Anne,

This is a wonderful tie-in to a hs field trip we took today to the Denver Seminary Chapel which is filled with stained glass windows from before WW2. They are gorgeous and we had a great tour guide explain the symbolism in some of the windows....

I'm doing a small unit on stained glass with the kiddos and this one of Edith Stein will be a great addition!

Blessings!

Lovely window! Thanks for sharing it with us. Edith Stein has always been a favorite of mine. My avatar picture is an icon of her that I found on the web.

I would love to hear from others about your favorite Edith Stein books....can we do that in this forum?

Blessings

I would too, particularly referals to her writing pertaining to the reason she is the paton of this board.
