What's the difference between Moira Farrell's CGS and Cay's Catholic Mosaic? I guess what I'm getting at is, would you use both? Would you prefer one over the other based on your style of homeschooling? I'd like to buy both, but I don't know whether that would be overload. Also, I have A Year with God and I'm wondering whether getting these others would be too much overkill? Help?

Hi Tina,
My two new "religious studies" purchases this year were Moira's 3-5 album and Cay's Catholic Mosaic. Out of every curriculum purchase this year, these are the two treasures I simply do not want to live without!
I do believe that you can use them concurrently, or at least alternately - at least I plan to. I don't think it will be overkill because although I already have many of the books in Catholic Mosaic, I do not own them all. So, when there is a gap with Mosaic books, I will fill in with Moira's beautiful, reverent lessons.
For example, the only Mosaic book I have for September is "The Tale of Three Trees", so the week of Sept 14 we'll be doing that book along with the suggested activities. For the remaining weeks in September I want to start with some of Moira's Altar lessons because I am beginning to prepare my 6 year old dd for her First Holy Communion.
I think the beauty of Catholic Mosaic is that you do not need to purchase every single book to get started. You really could purchase just one book per month to begin and have a lovely liturgical year with your family! I look forward to slowly adding Mosaic books to our collection, and having a different experience each year. Cay's Mosaic is truly a treaure that you'll be able to mine for years to come!
Moira's albums are different in that they add a prayerful, meditative element to the celebration of the liturgical year, where children will find the time and the quiet to form their own responses to the materials, and their own response to the voice of God..
But, I'm just new at this! I'm sure many of these other ladies will be able to write more succinctly about these two resources working together...

CGS and Catholic Mosaic are two completely different programs. I'm using both. I'm not at all familiar with the other title.
CGS is a very hands on way to learn the Catholic faith. It is simple yet beautiful and deep. After seeing CGS in use, I can not imagine our life without it.
Catholic Mosaic is more along the lines of wonderful living books that touch on Catholicism in some manner. I really like having these types of books in our house for perusing and learning.
However, in my opinion, if I had to pick one over the other, I would pick CGS. The manner in which our Catholic Faith is presented to our children is just so humbling.
I would then run off to the library and see if I could get any of the titles from Catholic Mosaic.

And for what ages are these programs, generally speaking? I *think* that someone mentioned that even though I have a 12 yob, he should start at the beginning of CGS. And I thought programs like Mosaic would be for perhaps 1st through 3rd grade? Please let me know whether I'm way off base. Thanks again,

I'm not sure about starting from the beginning of CGS for a 12 yob. Things would definitely need to be adjusted for that age.
CGS is a catechesis program, originally intended for young ages, with the breakdown of ages 3-5 and 6-9. This program is teaching the Liturgy, the Sacraments, basic catechesis AND the Liturgical Year. Moira Farrell's albums cover those ages.
Catholic Mosaic and A Year With God is based on the feasts of the Liturgical Year, and help supplement your catechetical work with your children. Both of these I think can be used year after year, when and what you want to implement. I think Cay did mention that the discussion questions are aimed for 1-3rd grades, but the materials and books suggested could be for all ages. MacBeth has mentioned elsewhere that she believes picture books can be used for all ages, and I quite agree.
A Year with God has crafts and activities to use through the year...and it's definitely not a program to do everything, every day. It's a supplement to help you celebrate the Liturgical Year.
