Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Any ideas? We have a friend at Duquesne who is looking to convert, but the theology there seems a bit weak.

I wish I knew. Though I will tell you that RCIA programs across the country are going to be improving. The bishops took a good look at RCIA a few years ago and identified many problems and things that weren't working.   There's a non-profit group called The Association for Catechumenal Ministry working with dioceses across the country to implement a truly orthodox and effective method of catechesis in RCIA. It's exciting to see what wonderful things are happening. Perhaps you could check with them and see if they have a recommendation for a program in your friend's area. I am sure they will help if they can.

God bless,

MacBeth,

Can you give me a few details? Or PM with details? My husband used to live in Pittsburgh. He's got a contact that might be able to help, but there are some questions, like is this person male or female? Did they want to come into the Church this Easter? Ever been baptized?

There is a good Opus Dei network in Pittsburgh. I'm not saying go through Opus Dei, but they will know what are the more solid parishes for the RCIA.

MacBeth,

I used to teach RCIA for a few years before I was married and I KNOW how difficult it can be to find a really good RCIA program. If your search for an RCIA that is faithful to the teachings of Church proves futile, there are some other options you may be able to explore.

There may be a priest who can instruct this person privately. Although many priests are extremely busy, we have found quite a few who will make time in their schedules to personally instruct someone who, for any number of reasons, cannot make it to a regular RCIA meeting. Perhaps a really faithful retired priest that you know of might be willing to take this on?

Another option that may be feasable is private instruction with a faithful layperson under the guidance of the priest who will receive this person into the Church (Whew! Holy run-on sentence, Batman!) For example, my husband and I were asked by a priest friend of ours to meet one on one with another couple who was considering entering the Catholic Church. We would meet with this couple for a few months and discuss certain teachings of the Church using the Catechism of the Catholic Church (really the BEST resource for RCIA!)Then they would meet with this priest more frequently closer to the Easter Vigil Mass (typically when candidates and catechumens are received into the Church). This was done to free up the priest a bit, while at the same time ensuring that the candidates were being well prepared..KWIM? Again, you might be able to do this with permission from the pastor of the Church where your friend will be received. You might have to make a case for WHY this person can't attend the actual RCIA meetings, though..

Hope this helps,

Mary

I was trained for team work using the ACM model and it is indeed excellent. If you can find a parish that uses it as a basis for their RCIA program, you'll be in good hands.
